Newb: x vs test vs down pipes

what's the difference if any? bought a Dinan exhaust and figure might as well go for a proper set up. I see x pipes test pipes down pipes for sale and it kinda gets confusing. are the terms interchangeable or are they totally different things?

test pipes will replace the primary cats while an x-pipe will replace the entire factory x-pipe. x-pipes will have different options such as what types of cats and whether there will be resonators or not. x-pipes cost more than test pipes, but many choose to do test pipes since deleting the primary cats is where the real power gain will be and it is much cheaper than purchasing a full x-pipe.

down pipes are not for our specific exhaust setup.

If you like Dinan, buy the Dinan X-pipe. Has 4 resonators so it won't be loud.

Keep in mind that test pipes will typically require you to cut up the stock X-pipe to attach them. Most aftermarket X-pipes will bolt directly in place of the stocker.

Downpipes are for turbocharged(N54/55, S55) vehicles only.

Also - test pipes will not allow you to pass emissions. I bought some and couldn't find any shops to even install them for me, as they're illegal for street use. Ended up selling them.

In terms of swapping back and forth the full x-pipe is easier. Test pipes if you want to go back to stock will most likely need to be welded. As far as gains catless x-pipe will yield a tad bit more but both are in the same ballpark since the primary cat is going to be deleted.

Here is a better visual of what our Test pipes remove. You can see the primary catalytic remove while the secondary remains.

Full X pipe Removes all Cats and replaces with 2 resonators. We also have a 100 cell catted version available as well.

You might smell gas with the Dinan xpipe because it has no cats. I went with the test pipes because they retain the secondary cats and were the most cost effective.
