Squeeky brakes

My front brakes squeek but iDrive tells me I have 3700km left on them. Although I understand this figure may not be too accurate, I am wondering what to go by?

1. Judging by the sound that I need to replace them (around now)
2. Judging by the iDrive when it tell me to replace them (in 3700km)

Thanks

Could do a visual inspection and see how close they are to the shim surface.

My rear brakes had 9k miles left on them according to the iDrive, but the pads had maybe...maybe...2mm of meat left.

This may be a n00b question and I kind of feel dumb asking, but can I do a visual inspection of the pads without taking the wheels off?
