Would you supercharge a 2008 M3 with 75k miles after rod bearings change?

Wanted to make a poll but couldn't figure out how lol

-Very well taken care of.
-oil changes every 7500 miles
-will change rod bearings at the same time.
-has been a daily driver and will continue to be so
-no major problems before
-have read the other posts on supercharging. very helpful but want some direct opinions.
-about 2 seconds away from pulling the trigger

Do some research. This has been discussed to death. Main bearings mirror rod bearings, and also show advanced wear in supercharging applications, so change those as well. When supercharging a naturally aspirated engine, the key is how much boost you plan to run. Boost, in general will obviously negatively influence engine longevity. The unofficial number is 4.5lbs of boost. Don't run more than this without properly prepping the engine which will cost a lot of money.

I put a VT2-650 kit on mine with 84k miles :shrug:

Stay strong with the maintenance and imo it should be good to go.

I have followed all the rod bearing threads and have not seen much to indicate trashed main bearings. I don't think main bearings are subjected to the same force as rod bearings since the rods move up and down and the crank stays in place. I think Gintani took apart a motor and Malek took apart a motor and found one or more bad main bearings. But those are the only two I am aware of and there are probably a couple of thousand supercharger kits running around on these motors. Many of those kits run more than 4.5 psi boost.

Building an engine is ideal, but very expensive. I would not do it unless it was necessary and I don't think it is necessary. I have changed the rod bearings on my motor and would not hesitate to add a supercharger kit next year when I will have about 75k miles, if I have the money for a used kit.

I wouldn't supercharge any car unless you have a deep pocket. Supercharges produce an extra force that eventually will end up stressing the engine and speeding up the wear of it. Are you asking if it looks nice, works nice, gives you a lot of power? Yes to all but our engines are not meant to have that much of stress for a very long time. You could modify it and still use it. That won't hurt as much. But if you are going to abuse it, then you will end up with other problems besides the rods. That's MPO.

Appreciate the feedback everyone. Still on the fence about it to be honest but its also something ive always wanted and now i finally have the means to do it. Just dont want to destroy the car in the process.

If you change the bearings you should wait for a 1,000 miles or so before installing a SC. There is a break-in period. So will say less mileage, so more.....

No, there is not a break in period for bearings. There is no contact.

But I would probably go easy on the car for 100-200 miles just in case you screwed something up on the install. After doing any major work, I try to drive the car for a few hours over a few days to make sure it is sorted out before I run it at the dragstrip or beat on it really hard or do further performance mods.

That's true. When I had mine done I was told to give it a good 800 - 1,0000 miles before WOT, just to make sure the engine "sorted itself out". Not that the bearings need to be broken in you see (they don't) but, just to make sure it's done right, take it easy on it initially.

I'm in the same boat. Had the car since 20k miles and now at 64k. Daily driver that I put 20k/year into. I don't beat on the car hard but would love to have the S/C just to have fun occasionally. I would definitely have the rod bearings replaced for peace of mind.

Mine has 42k miles and I supercharged it at 39k miles. I did the bearings at 41k miles for piece of mind.

I got the same issue thinking about sc mine too but mine has 18k I was told rod bearings we're updating in 2011? Don't know if that's 100% true but good luck and enjoy it..

Not really updated but rather the environmentally unpopular lead was removed and replaced with something more green though perhaps less effective. I would not assume all is well, but the odds are still on your side since the vast majority of these motors are running fine on their original bearings.
