Cold Start Problem E92 M3
Hello my fellow m3 colleagues,
58k miles on my e92 m3, services done by my tech (he's brilliant) but car is not under warranty and i never take the car to the dealer anyways. Anyways, recently the past month or two, the car idles very unusually only during the cold start ups. The RPM needle jumps up and down and it seems as if the car is about to shut off, like its struggling to breathe and then the code is thrown (Engine malfunction, reduced power). But when i turn the car off and back on immediately, no code is thrown and everything seems fine? I just replaced the motor mounts not too long ago so i know that's not the problem. Could it be that my battery is low? or something to do with the throttle actuators? Could use some insight, my tech is out of town at the moment. Thanks. I'm currently having a problem with my throttle actuator. But judging from what I've been reading sounds like maybe an idle control valve. I'd say find a place or dealer to have it scanned and research the codes. Or if you don't mind waiting a couple days order a tool do scan it yourself which is what I'm doing
Good luck |

Mine did the same thing. Changed out the idle control and it fixed it. But I can't say it will be a fix for your car.

ya im starting to think its the idle control valve because the battery is pushing 12.4-12.5 with the car off and 14.5 with it on (maybe the alternator is helping with the charge). I mean the battery may be slightly low but im not sure if thats the only problem.

I had the same issues a few months back. I had a rough idle, then the car stalled out. Dash lit up with all kind of error messages, reduced power, DSC malfunction, emissions malfunction, etc. Had to have it flat bedded in. It was throwing idle actuator and idle control faults. They replaced the idle control valve but that didn't solve the problem. They traced it to a DME problem and updated the software. I haven't had the issues since. GL!

The ICV will trigger a trouble code. It did mine. Which I changed the ICV and I still had the idle fluctuations and stalling. I changed the fuel tank breather valve and it quit fluctuating and stalling. It idles smoothly and cold start ups are just like new. No idle surges.

I changed my fuel breather valve and still have this issue. Multiple shops have pulled codes and nothing has appeared, but the cold start issue is pretty obvious (to the point the car will choke and jump without a 2+ minute warm up). I'm thinking I need to pull the plenum and fuel rails to see if there is a bad injector, look at coils and plugs, and then last swapping the ICV if those appear to be OK. |
