Anyone ever swap a 08 DCT transmission into an 09?

Long story short - I purchased an 08 M3 DCT transmission and had my shop swap it into my 09 DCT M3 and my DCT paddles don't work. I'm looking to see if anyone knows if an 08 DCT transmission is compatible with later model years?

Slightly more details - They found that the 08 transmission harness was slightly different and was missing a ground wire. They went ahead and added a ground wire to the harness connector (pin #16) and grounded it to the case. Without this, the transmission would not power up.

The car was 100% for about 30 miles or so but now I currently have a transmission malfunction error and my DCT paddles don't work. The car drives fine other than that.

I feel that there is a pinched wire or there is a connector issue, but the shop is suggesting I return the transmission I purchased and buy another transmission from an 09+ car to swap in which certainly is not an option for me for obvious reasons. They are saying the 08 transmission is probably not compatible.

Fault codes and description below:

5a73 shift paddles incorrect voltage
5a58 sensor for cooling oil temp
5a76 transmission input speed sensor value implausible

Can anyone confirm (or deny) that an 08 DCT transmission is compatible with an 09 car? I paid a good chunk of change to have my car fixed, and it still not 100%. Any help is appreciated as this has been a crazy frustrating experience for me!

I've been talking to Kris and Steve @ SSP. From what they can tell, there shouldn't be a difference. I was just hoping someone on the forums had actually swapped an 08 transmission into their 09 car and confirmed it to work.

You're the only one I've read about on this particular forum that has been going through this or any DCT swap.

Even so, DCTs are still far more reliable than MT boxes which you would know if you have been here more than 5 minutes.

This is 100% wrong. A manual box will always be more reliable.

Except they aren't in this car....count up the number of gearboxes/flywheels/clutches that have been swopped out here on M3post and compare with the small number of DCTs that have been exchanged and its no contest.

Let's not clutter up the op post. But clutches/flywheels are maintenance related and should last 100k easy. We can't say why some people can't drive. Other than that the 6 speed is a simple, very good piece that yes is much more reliable than any other trans. In this car and every other car. You're delusional to believe otherwise. How many leaking dct threads have we read in the past month?

I guess it depends on whether you call a ($300 to fix) weeping pan seal a reliability issue...because that is just about all there is.
Compared to having an MT box replaced because of synco wear, I know which problem I would rather have.

Right, just based moving parts alone. The DCT in these cars has been remarkable compared to the SMG cars of past and other DCT variants, but there's nothing like a good manual. (no offense as the DCT is better for 7 gears IMO)

check on realoem.com to see if they have exactly the same part number. maybe they made some changes along the way. I heard many DCT swaps but never heard of that problem

yup, i checked before. same part numbers for all years. was looking for some real world confirmation of compatibility.

They replied to my emails a few years ago so might be worth a try.
Its more likely to be something BMW changed I would have thought though.

You have a trans input speed sensor fault as well as temp sensor fault-that's causing the warning light
