BMW Motorsports Final Drive
BMW Motorsports apparently offers a final drive upgrade for E92 M3 DCT. Anyone use this before? Any reviews?

Driftlo, thanks for the info. So the bmw ms are 3.62 final drive for dct?
Any risk of over rev? Will I need a tune to get the most out of it? What's the new top speed with the 3.62? |

Careful when going with an aggressive ratio on a DCT car, you can cause all sorts of shifting funkiness.

Mike, thanks for the feedback. Looked back at some older posts and it does appear 3.62 is too short for DCT and will cause problems with shifting, rev matching etc. Sounds like 3.45 is the recommended FD upgrade.

the lsd improves traction and stability, a shorter gearset will result in more torque to the wheels. 15% shorter will give you 15% more wheeltorque (so this is what you can expect from a 3.62 compared to a 3.15 ratio in a dct car). this is a new 4.10 final drive gearset: and this is a clutch type lsd core: this is the pinion installed in the pumpkin: and this is the ringgear attached to the new lsd: and this is how it looks when it sits inside the pumpkin: Quote:
i suggest 3.45 for 1M racecars, 3.62 for e92 dct racecars and 4.10 for 6mt. if you drive a 3.62 in automatic mode you should adjust the software. i have a guy here in germany who can do it but i guess it doesnt make sense to send the DME to germany and back?! maybe there is someone in the US who can do this too. i will ask him if he has a partner in the us. you can calculate the topspeed with a gearbox calculator. depends on the wheels you are using and so on. one customer told me, he was still able to go beyond 300kph. - 4.44 new - 4.10 new - 3.91 new & used - 3.85 new & used - 3.73 used - 3.64 used - 3.62 new & used - 3.45 used - 3.25 bmw oe new - 3.23 used all new gearsets are original bmw motorsports parts (except 3.25, this is an non-ms bmw part). only the 4.10 and 4.44 feature a shotpeened surface, the others are more or less the same than the non-ms parts! bmw gearsets are of very high quality and still quite affordable (compared to i.e. porsche gearset prices). aftermarket stuff is more expensive and often fails so i always try to usw oe parts here. |

I purchased my car with the Dinan 3.45 already installed and it's great but I've never done a back-to-back comparison of my car vs stock. Also, when I called Dinan to ask some questions about it they indicated that they used to source the gears from BMW Motorsport before BMW stopped making them (as driftflo also mentioned).
I've also read posts where folks mentioned having issues with DCT and the 3.62.

if you dont change the software there may be issues in automatic mode indeed. what you also should keep in mind: the 3.45 gearset can be installed without changing the rear differential cover! for the 3.62 you will need the cover from a 6mt car! |

no diy! switching the lsd unit is easier than switching the gearset.
you need some special tools, adjustment ring sets and the knowledge how to measure it in. here i took some pics of a c63 amg gearset change i did recently: http://www.limitedslip.de/service/einbau_c63.html the m3 axle is a little different but the work and tools are more or less the same. |

driftlo, i'm keen on your used 3.45. While I have the diff open, is there any wear and tear parts I should change? Gaskets or bearings, etc?

you need a new paper or liquid seal for the diffcover, a new flange seal for the pinion as well as a new crush sleeve for the pinion!
if there was no problem with the bearings and other seals before, there is no need to change them... although changing to new ones is never wrong of course! |
