The results of this video do not suprise me at all.At the last trackday at Calabogie there was an R8 there being driven by a guy who is a regular at the track(they also have a 2010 GT3) and I chased him down twice during the day and both times he pulled off when I got close enough that the pass would probally happen on the next lapOn the straight that I was entering in 3rd gear & shifting to 4th and was seeing 218kph on my best laps at the braking zone,I was able to close on him about 3-4 car lengths every lap.I am pretty sure this would not be the case with a 5.2 V10 R8.An awesome car though.

The R8 though still quick it isn't the quickest kid on the block as this video shows. Aerodynamics play a big part in the R8's lack of top end speed and it explains why the 5.2FSI still isn't playing with the big boys even though it's got 525hp and boot load of torque.
No the R8's party piece is it's handling which is truly remarkable but like anything if you don't have the skill to play to it's strengths then even an M3 will catch it up and overtake it as Duncan explained. You know it's still remarkable that given the humble chassis that the M3 is based on that it can still show many of the exotics a thing or two when it comes to trackdays, and unlike the rest of them in the M3 you can bring the whole family along to watch, which is nice. |
