I see you mention the main bearings. The typical replacement people usually do is just the rod bearings right?
main bearings and rod bearing is different things? Sorry if its a dumb question, kinda new to cars.
Yeah for that failed engine I bought it was a main bearing issue. My original engine imploded due to failed rod bearings (as is usual). I put the supercharger on pretty quickly after getting it so didn't realize the rod bearings are an issue so didn't replace them.

Anyway, I'm working with Robert at BEbearings now (who is an awesome guy, by the way) and he's helping me source all my build components. Decided to go with full internals upgrade (low comp pistons, forged rods, VAC mains, BE rod bearings, spec clutch, etc). Keeping the crank though since I'm not stroking it.

Should hopefully have everything in the next couple weeks. Dinan are going to inspect/hone my new block, but I'm doing the engine build itself myself.

Will post up my engine build when I get started..

Thanks!

Any update on this project? How are you setting up your mains?

Actually I did the first start a couple hours ago and it went well. Engine fired right up! Mains are VAC coated, and rod bearings are BE bearings.

I ended up with 10.5:1 low compression CP coated pistons, CP rods, balanced OEM crank, Dinan head springs, Cometic head gaskets, ARP head studs, and pretty much everything else OEM (except I have the ESS supercharger with all that entails).

Thanks!

Sounds amazing I was in the exact position several weeks ago

Looking for a good s65 was impossible . I found a sleeve low comp buIld @9:1 cp pistons carillo rods everything ... the total bill of sale was 27k Cad . The previous owner over heated it running High boost application , strangely after spending all that money he didn?t upgrade the oil cooler . So it had a knock .. the guy only wanted 3-4 cad . I felt the block was worth that, but my intuition told me to walk away.

I found my doner motor local , the installer charged me about 900-1000 cad for the install ( so that?s like 700-800usd) not sure why everyone?s getting 2500-3000k quotes . He replaced my motor in a few short days , the motor came out from the hood easily.

Fluids and seals orings and flanges came out to another 300-400 cad .

I?ve been driving the Stock m3 for days now. Feels great and I?ve been telling myself do I really need be charger ?? Lol The stock car has nice low end , but lacking up top. Driving them back to back restored my love for my ess car . If we?re to do it over I would have done what you have done by starting bottom up and replacing/ everything . Smart build. Good luck .

Nice, besides using vac on the mains what else did you do to set it up? Did you grind the crank to get the clearances right or were they good as is?

I sourced a low mileage crank and it was within spec. The crank got some balancing work done, but the journals required no machining. The block also did not require any line honing.

Thanks!

Shame you didn't make it out in time for Black Friday BW in that car, would have been nice to exorcise the rod bearing demons on the one year anniversary.

It is a nice motor, but I prefer the LS myself (LS6 swapped E36), a bit biased LOL!

Expecting nice #'s from the supercharged motor!

We know. You’ve mentioned several times. All hail LS-nation.

I got a used engine from another forum member, but I just got it for the block. I then rebuilt everything. Carbahn - Steve Dinan’s new company - rebuilt the bottom end for me (CP Carrillo pistons and rods, BE bearings, VAC mains, etc), and I did the top end and put it all together.

Just did my first full track weekend with the car yesterday & Saturday - went pretty well!

Thanks!

Btw, had the main bearings failed on your original engine?
And what mileage & year?
