I seem to burn a quart or more in 5k. Maybe I should try a thicker oil but M1 0W40 is a great oil. One of the diesel truck 5W40 could be worth a try.

the M1 WAS a LL-01 oil until the recent formula change.

well, I haven't figured out the rumor about M1 0-40 losing its LL01 accrediation. So...today, I'm using OEM 10-60 oil again, but not the Castrol brand. I'm using the dealer (Pennzoil) TwinPower Turbo 10-60 oil. I plan on running 5k interval and doing an analysis and compare to a M1 0-40 5k analysis.

Pennzoil plat euro 5w40 performed well for me and gave great UOA's. Currently running RL 0w40 and am sending out an oil sample today. Car seems happy with it. It's about 10% thicker than M1 but with great cold flow and a strong add pack. Burned less than half a qrt over 4k miles.

I'm shocked that so many people are putting in 0w40 in the E9X M3, especially with all the oil burning threads. There are plenty other oils that are comparable to the 10w60. Use one of those

this is actually the main reason I switched out of 0-40 this time around. I am now on OEM Pennzoil 10-60

There's other reasons to run a lighter weight oil. Those being faster warm up, smoother and faster revving engine operation and more lubrication for rod bearings.

I think you're missing the point. The point of using 0w-40 is to get away from the highly viscous 10w-60. You might debate the logic of going to a lighter oil, but you should at least understand why people are making the switch before you criticized. (This is coming from someone who is running 10w-60, btw.)

I switched to M1 0W40 after my 1200mi service and never looked back, and my M3 doesn't burn oil, at least the onboard computer ever prompt me to add oil.
40wt is actually the most chosen oil when it comes to performance applications, whether you have a sportbike or a supercar, you are most likely to find 40wt oil in your engine. |

Car companies today are getting progressively lower and lower in oils weights. The fact that BMW are specifying a pretty heavy oil leads me to believe that they know something. |

Using RL 0w40. Burning 1 qt per 1000km probably because I "redline" it everyday.
