One of the main reasons I got rid of my Evo X was that my $42k car had an $18k interior straight out of the base Lancer. At least the Golf R interior matches its MSRP.

That's fair. The performance and interior now matches it's $40k price tag.

I drove a stg 1 MK7 GTI for a year, while I have no doubt its probably faster below 100mph than my e92 m3, its just not as fun to drive.

While the GTI is much lighter (3000lbs), the e9x with its s65, DCT, LSD and suspension setup makes it feel much more connected and engaging.

The R adds a good amount of weight, but as we can see from the APR videos its a 0-100mph beast in stage 1 form.

You would be surprised how many people would and have currently. There's also a fair bit of former P car owners buying them because of the added functionality with minimal loss in performance. There are a surprising number of former M car guys over on there forums and not one is unhappy with there purchase...

Hatchbacks are a love it or hate it but your opinion isn't shared by everyone...this coming from a person who has owned an M3 for quite some time...
Interesting take. I do like hatchbacks but we're talking an additional 100+ HP. I guess I'm taking it from my own perspective which is why would you limit yourself to a VW when you can have a premium M from BMW?

Most credible sources on vwvortex think it's unlikely the US will get the R400. The next Mk8 R should get a pretty decent bump in power, though, perhaps to 350. Projects are next GTI will be 300, there will be an R ~350, and the RS (production version of the concept R400) will be 400, but the US will only get the first two.

Agree strongly with this sentiment. I recently added a Golf R (replacing a long time mostly track R32 that I got rid of after it blew an engine), and the car really does seem to be one of those cars that is more than the sum of it's parts. Everything just works so well together. I've been surprised how well I like the car. It doesn't have the solidity of the M3, but it has a nimbleness the M3 doesn't come close to. Luckily I have both, but I could easily see some people preferring the R depending on how they prioritized certain characteristics.

I really wanted to get a golf R actually since I love hatch backs and would love to have one in the garage. Super fast, super comfortable, super amazing gas mileage and can transport dogs. But the old lady couldn't stop talking shit on it! She kept saying it looks like a small mini van and belongs only to hipsters, regardless of how fast it is. She's in the hate it crowd of hatch backs. I still want to get a gla 45 down the road, which is essentially a better golf r in my opinion.

The new wagons looks good. Hell that new RS3 5 door or even the BMW 135i Msport 5 door. Damn they are nice looking.

with those numbers, i'm surprised it weighs 3,400 lbs. there are a lot of other things i would rather spend $38k on. cool car though.

Essentially, yes. But it's all around *sharper* and "has a little more up top" say some of the most prolific reviewers currently.

I'm in the "oh my god am I really gonna do this?" stage right now, where all I can think about is 50% 8200rpm in an S65 and 50% no warranty on my M3. I really think I may end up in a Golf R at some point. The subdued looks aren't for everyone, but neither is a bright yellow M3. Golfs are imageless, and sold the world over. New car with this much performance and this much practicality = must consider. Should be a pretty even trade..

Are some of you on crack ? There is no comparison between an M3 and a golf R. They are easily 2 hierarchy classes apart in every category : construction quality standard, multi dimensional performance, safety ( the M3 is build to crash like a tank, the golf like a coffin) , looks and refinement, V8 engine exclusivity, engine performance, established luxury segment versus hipster who blew his economy budget, exotic character of the S65, racing driving style with flat torque linear response versus annoying torque that peaks followed by drop. Some of you don't deserve your M3.

There is not even a remote possibility to start making a comparison funny guys. Even a 335is vs golf R is in favor of the 335is. Sometimes i wonder if half of the people on this forum know how to drive their M3 properly in all driving situations, clearly some do not.

This is exactly like someone who between a double cheeseburger fastfood and a homely cooked 4 stars restaurant premium braised beef and potatoes diner start making a comparison on which could be enjoyed more. There is no comparison required.

While I am not out shopping for a VW, there are certainly cars with much lower price tags than a new M3 that are a hoot to drive. If that 'fun-to-drive' is your number one priority, and not things like image, appearance, luxury features, and exotic sound-- then the lower priced alternatives make perfect sense. And you can daily drive them without worries. I'm fine with the look of hot hatches, but I do recognize that there is no snob appeal there as far as the general public is concerned. Only the true enthusiasts will even know what a Golf R is.

And it's still not faster or more fun to drive than the STI. Really, there is no comparison - if you want a fun compact AWD sports sedan, the STI and Evo are still the best. The Golf R is still the understeering, no feeling car it has always been.

i occasionally enjoy a cheeseburger from In-n-out, do I deserve my M3?

oh, I also drive a X5 oil burner, do I deserve me M3 in light of this fact?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "all driving situations" but I commute with my M3 and drive the X5 on weekends, again do I deserve my M3?
