It absolutely will if the dealership finds out you did it.

Hi it depends on your market.... Anything that isn't a BMW part can potentially/ technically void your warrenty... Even mounting non-BMW standard allow wheels in the UK or Germany can void your warrenty.. But people don't seem to care...

Note : For 335i owners, adding a piggyback can also void your warranty if your dealer finds out. I also am sure that after a front end collision your insurance company will also want to know what the "Piggyback" in your 335i does. In the UK, this would definately void you insurance unless previously declared

Remains to be seen whether these guys actually increased hp to 476hp with an ECU reflash and cats. I already have the cats, will do the and ECU modification ASAP and then dyno the thing to see how much gain there actually is. Don't know who will do my ECU yet though. Any suggestions welcome!!!!

in my humble opinion only a superior idiot would "chip" or mod this gem of an engine. it is so finely tuned and optimized. BMW would have extract more power out of it, if they found it would not be disadvantageous to engine longevity.

While i'm sure that is a part of it.. they have other reasons for keeping the power where it is.

I'm sure they dont want its power levels to be too close to the M5. ..as well as other reasons.

This Noelle Motors outfit is just down the road from where I will be living starting in January. What do they charge for a reflash?

yes, there could be other reasons, but buyers of M5 are typically in a different age group and with different priorities and reasons.
btw, i fully understand business sense of the vendor, but of buyer ...not so much

To be honest, I am very sceptical about such a huge rise in power and torque with just a remap.

This suggests the engine is heavily detuned.

The E46 M3, E39 M5 and pretty much every other M power engine never ever see more than around 20 bhp from a remap and sports cats alone.

Yes, there are companies who do claim + 30 bhp from an E46 M3 but in practice there have never been any dyno graphs to back this up.

The other thing that makes me even more sceptical about this is that there is no before dyno graph.

It is EASY to make a dyno print out what you want without showing the conditions.

What I'd like to see is wheel power and torque of before and after the mods are put in place.

Without this ...... it's meaningless.

It's similar to a graph of a remapped E92 M3 that was published by a very well known remapping company in a BMW magazine - it just showed the after figure. What, did they forget to dyno the car before hand? Do we know how much power the M3 was putting out on their dyno?

I hope people see my point here.

Thanks
Sal

Just want to point out that mr. Noelle used to be (head of?) engineer at Alpina.

Do you know what they do at Alpina ? They take a standard BMW, optimise a few things (always including the engine), and sell it.
Alpina products are warranted and serviced by the regular BMW dealer network.

My point being: This guy/company knows what they're doing.
That said, I know from experience they post estimated optimised figures before their producst is actually released to market.

"Nach 14 Jahren in der Entwicklungsabteilung bei der Firma Pierburg in Neuss war Karl-Otto Noelle von 1984 bis 1993 bei BMW ALPINA in Buchloe als Leiter der Motorenentwicklung tätig."

In short: this guy has worked as "Leader of Motor Tweaking" at Alpina for 9 years.

Well, all I can say is if you can reliably increase the power of an already “gem of an engine”, it becomes even more special. Sure its going to have an impact on longevity etc… but these engines are always over-engineered anyway, so if I take 2 years life out of a 20 year life put gain 20% hp!! I´m in!!! lol!!!

I am also however very skeptical of the 476hp figure with only an ECU and cats!!

This engines are always over –engineered to last a long-long time. Cost issues also have something to do with it as well as brand positioning, insurance company/cost strategies, etc… At the end of the day, if you can take a gem of an engine and increase its power by say 20% while reducing its life from 20 to 18 years, it then becomes more of a gem and I personally am all for it. I do it all the time with M engines as well as AMG engines. Always and improvement and have never had any issues with any of them.
