I don't understand these threads. Are you that unhappy with your choice in vehicle that you have to justify it by saying the newer replacement model has an engine that sits 2" higher? Who cares?

I purchased, and still own (with no plans on selling until the day I can buy my Gallardo) my E90 M3 because I'm an ///M enthusiast. Have been since the E36 was still on the road and highly sought after and the E46 had just come out. The E9x series is just the one that floats my boat I guess. I have no desire to own an F8x series. None. Nada. Zilch. I love the way they look, and they are certainly better in many areas than the predecessor but a) I've never been one to have the latest and greatest of everything and b) I don't feel the need to keep up with the Jones' (where cars are concerned anyways). I buy and drive what I like, and the E9x is the best thing under 70K for me IMHO. But I'm confident and comfortable with that decision. I don't need to justify it by making absurd comparisons to the competition.

I would own each M3 of every generation if I had the garage space and if my wife wouldn't kill me.

I'm not really into trying to compare the E92 to the F80/F82. They're both great cars in their own right.

I'd be happy with either car.

guys, the reason it jumps curbs is the PSI differences between the rear tires and front tires, so I'm told by a pro driver.

So what you really mean is, you don't have money for a larger garage, more cars or less whiney wife

Back to the OP-
That two inches of added engine height is reflected the M4's styling. The hood-line of the M4 is noticeably taller than the e92 M3..

why would that matter ? well it matters for roll. Basically degrading stability and traction when changing heading direction.

Let's take a look a the extra moment of unwanted roll force that this creates:

First recap S55 (m4) engine weight :
kg / lbs : 205/452

m4 extra roll moment : τ = 2 inches x F

=2 / 12 feet * 205 lbs = +/- 34 lbs.ft

Roll is impacted. This means loading the outside wheels more in turns and further explains why the m4 looses its rear too easily, it's not just the engine torque it's the engine adding its weight 2 inches more above center of gravity. The E92 M3 is superior in that regard. If you look at F1 cars all the weight sit extremely low above ground for the same reason.

As an engineering test pilot, I can't argue with your physics, but I believe you will find that on this board that emotion trumps science.

Not at all. And if you don't get your psi just right in your tires, you'll end up doing what my avatar is doing.

Good info, OP. I think the e92 M3 was a more dominant car of its time than the M4 is now. But part of that has to do with other manufacturers improving their products, especially the American cars.

I assume you're referring to the location of the center of gravity for both engines, fully dressed? If not, the discussion is mute. Where did you get the GC data for the S55 and S65?

the S55 is 2 inches higher and now 2 lbs. heavier... gotta love these comments

they are both great cars, just ones NA and ones FI. driven both, the new engine put the down very differently... that doesn't really make it worse, we just got more choices

S55 makes power very easily with cooling advantage over the s65 I believe
