Dealer out of diff fluid?!

I just dropped my car off for its 1200 mile service and the dealer told me that they would have to do the service in two parts (I would have to bring my car back) because they are out of diff fluid. My SA said BMW is experiencing some kind of backorder and it would be a couple weeks before they would get any diff fluid. Has anyone heard this? Seems really weird and unbelievable to me...

Seems odd to me too. Did they tell you this after you left the car or while you were there? Who did you end up using?

They told me when I dropped it off. I am actually still here because I am waiting for my car.

It happened to me here in San Antonio. Had to wait a 2 days. Austin had some but did not want to give any away since there seems to be a shortage. This is for the 83 22 2 282 583 (SAF-XJ in a 1 ltr pack)

I just called and talked to our Service Director and he stated that a couple weeks ago the diff fluid was on back order. We got some in. He is going to call me back in a minute he is checking to see if its still on back order.

So with that being said chances are he is telling you the truth.

Thanks. I did not doubt he was telling the truth. I meant it is unbelievable in the sense that BMW would run out. Ha. Anyway, John (my SA) is getting some from Irvine, so they will be changing it now. I have not received the car back yet, but so far, John has been great. I will update once I get the car, but I expect everything to be good to go.

update:

So yes the fluid is still on back order. We actually only have 6 bottles left as well right now. its takes 3 bottles to do one car. We have 3 cases on backorder still as well.

So looks like BMW in general is experience the same issue

When I took my car in for 1200-mile service they realized they were out of manual transmission fluid. They offered to give me the car back in the meantime but I told them that I brought it there to have the job done right, so I'd rather wait for that than make two trips. It was only a few days (since it was over a weekend) so it wasn't the end of the world, but I admit I was irritated on principle. I had scheduled the appointment two weeks beforehand, they knew that my car was 6MT, and they knew what service it was coming in for, so I feel like they should have let me know before I brought it up there so I had the option to keep my car until they had all the necessary supplies.

Just had my differential fluid changed yesterday at Monrovia BMW. FYI both Savage (purchased my vehicle here) & New Century insisted the change was not necessary. Hope this helps anyone in the SoCal area.

I get what you mean, but it's not as if they look at your car/your service apt as anything special.
If they're a high volume dealership, I highly doubt they would let you know beforehand.

If they're low volume, more personal based, then maybe that's different..
I know the personal phone numbers to the SA and techs that work on my car, so they tend to let me know what's going on. But if you're not on that close of a personal relationship, I doubt you'd be informed about something similar in the future (unless you make a point of it now, then they may make a note on your record to contact you prior to your apt)

But I do know what you mean my the frustration of setting time aside and not being able to get it all done at that moment

It is more just making sure that they have done everything possible. For example, I called another dealer that had the fluid and the dealer that was servicing my car went there to pick it up so they could change it.
