They're plenty reliable. Just like the M cars, the RS stuff is way overbuilt. Just look at some of the JHM or APR-modified RS4s that are running 10s in the quarter mile without any complaints.

Also, not a lot of dealerships? I don't know what it's like in California, but in Illinois the ratio of BMW to Audi dealerships is basically 1:1.

I'm def not worried about dealerships. In fact, we have a good independent Audi shop called Auto Assets that knows all about these things.

Great, I say go for it. The RS4 is a beast of a sedan and quite rare.

I had an A8, which shared its engine with the RS4. The engine is pretty solid and reliable. It makes good power and torque as well.

Those engines are barely related, FYI. There have been several 4.2L V8s in recent Audi history.

^yep. they all sound about the same but the internals and power numbers are all vastly different. doesn't matter which version you get, they're all a pain to work on if you're a DIY'er.

There was a limited production run of RS4 Cabriolets. Only 300 have ever seen the light of day. I wasn't aware such a car ever existed until running across one on eBay a few years ago. There's one currently for sale, but with a price reflective of the aforementioned exclusivity.

That's sharp with the red. I'm always curious about a car like this in a cab. It's obviously the most performance oriented car in the A4 lineup and if you dig that enough to pay the premium why get a cab? I feel the same about Ms and 911 turbos in a cab. The RS4 isnt exactly a track car like the Ms and 911s though, but whatever makes people happy. Id like to see the price on that car, with that mileage, in a 4 door. Hopefully the hardtops will draw a premium over time as they do with most performance cars.

$32k purchase price.
So you did buy it for $32k? That's not a bad price at all, what's the mileage and year?

I think over, the only thing an RS4 has going for itself, is the exterior looks (subjective), the OEM exhaust sound, and rarity.

Overall, if you want best car in the class with all things considered, it's the M3. Period.

Those are three pretty good things. It's going in for a PPI tomorrow. 2007 with 52k miles. I already have an M3 This will be nice to add to the garage.

Judging by your paragraph you covered all the bases (especially carbon build up, are you going to do that walnut shell treatment every four years ?) and you seem comfortable with the car. I say you are the perfect owner for the RS4. Buy and Enjoy it. The engine sounds great. The doors are much better than on the M3 which is my pet peeve. They slam shut perfectly not like the improperly balanced and wobbly M3 coupe doors.

Yeah, I'll put a little aside for the carbon clean every two years or so. I like that this one has the cleaning done and the suspension issues resolved already. Those 2 things seem to be the Achilles heel with these.

This was my experience as well. My sister had this car and it looked good, had a great interior, sounded pretty good and was darn quick. I remember taking it out on the highway and getting on it on a long sweeping "S" on-ramp like I do with my M3. It felt very front heavy and definitely felt like it was plowing the ramp with understeer so much that I had to back way off the throttle to keep it on the road. It had PS2 tires so it wasn't because of the tires. As others have said it's an AWD car so it's expected to be somewhat heavier overall but the balance felt very different than the M3. It felt like a 60-40 front-back weight distribution to me.

They are a bit front heavy but to get the best out of the quattro system you have to get on the gas a bit earlier and let it pull you through the corners. It's not quite the same as how you'd exit a corner in a RWD car, I agree.

Then I'm impressed that I guessed that information from just a few drives. Damn I'm good

Ask the guys over at audizine for input. A buddy of mine has one and his engine blew a couple years ago. It was a very expensive repair seeing as he was outside Warranty. It blew suddenly one morning leaving for work. It took him months to get some reputable shop to work on it and sourcing a motor from Germany was also a pain. I like the car but after seeing him go thru the pain and aggravation I was turned off. And yes like other have said the suspension goes to shit. He had it replaced under warranty and again outside Warranty with coilivers.

Yes, I've been on Audizine but, just like on this site, it can be biased so I wanted opinions from this group. Good info but im not too worried about the motor. That stinks for your friend but that's the first story I've heard like that. I think you can find one off cases with any car, including Ms.

also the first time i've ever heard of a story like that. also been an audi owner and on audizine since 2012. can relate to the frustration of repairs on the cars though. have to be a very experienced diy'er to do most things on audis. was pleasantly surprised how easy the m3 is to work on but if you plan on taking it to the shop whenever needed, then i wouldn't be too concerned.
