Does BMW do this for EU spec cars? Come to think of it, i have seen this on newer Audi's in the US.
"Rear Fogs" = a brightly illuminated tail light (single light, usually left tail I think). Done so that cars approaching from the rear at high speeds (autobahn) can see your car ahead more clearly. Looks like defective brake light when seen in the U.S. |

Got it!!! The Euro spec has that light on both sides on the E92 M3!! How ever would you change the look on that?

On the E46 the LCM (Light Control Module) also stored vehicle information (including odometer), so had to be coded to the car. Doesn't sound like that's the case any more?

I would be worried about getting pulled over by a cop that thinks my brake lights are functioning improperly. I would guess > 2 of the U.S. population would know what the rear fog light is.
I am guessing the speeding alone will be enough provocation for the cops...don't need to give them anything else to work with |

I have only seen this done on the sedan, anyone know if this is def. also available on the coupe?
Also the other threads I have read have said that the front fog lights must be on for the rear to work...but M3 has no front Fogs, so are we looking at a different part to purchase?

I see Volvos and Audis running around like this all the time, and frankly, it irks the hell out of me. I understand a want for rear foglights if you live in a mountainous area, or possibly by the ocean where your town is engulfed in fog more than 5 times a year. However, when I'm driving around on a clear night and that one bulb on an A4's taillight is searing my god damned retinas, I can't say I'm a happy camper.

From what I have read front fogs do not ahve to be on in order to have the rear on so it should still work for us. Also mentioned just you orderign the euro switch with the fog buttons will enable the rear fogs. You will lose the active breaking light? when the rear fogs are on but thats because both systems use the same lights.
All in all I just ordered the switch really so that I can utilize the front fog switch for other options that I am adding to my car better then a random switch and its stock appearance. Here is the switch that I ordered. BTW they say in Europe the left part controls the adjustment of the HID head lights. Will let you know if its true when I install it.

There are 2 different types of switches one with the thunb dial for "front headlights" and one with just from and rear fogs.
The one that I got was without the Thumb dial part number 61 31 6 932 796 Apparently the one with the thumb dial is 61 31 6 932 792. From what I have gathered the thumb dial will not work on our cars anyways so nothing lost there. I havent taken pictures yet but will have some posted by tonight. interior pics looks like just the ones posted above. but I will add some showing how the tails look.

Thanks to jinxter's impetus, I have installed the rear fog switch. It's really easy. I know he will be following up with a further enhancement of this mod, but I thought I'd post a basic DIY.
1) Part number is 61 31 6 932 796, "Control Element Light", $87.40 list 2) Starting at the outside (door side), gently pry out the edge of the trim piece that contains the left air vent. There are two prongs that are a friction fit. 3) Through the hole created, pull out the lower piece containing the light switch. It is a friction fit with 3 prongs. 4) Disconnect the light switch from the panel by depressing and releasing the two tabs on the top and two on the bottom. 5) Disconnect the electrical by rotating the lock lever and pulling out. 6) Connect the electrical to the new switch. 7) Attach the new switch to the panel, making sure each tab "clicks" into the lcoked position. 8) Reinstall the two removed panels by pushing gently back into place. The rear fogs can now be turned on with the lower push switch. Warning: These are very bright, so only use them when it's really foggy (or maybe some A*hole is tailgating you).

Awesome, thanks guys! Now... a gold star for whoever can figure out the part number for the LCM without the front fog switch (the one that is used in Euro spec M3s).
