My first blackstone report after engine rebuild on M1 0-40
Some of you may recall I spun a rod bearing in my 07 build M3 at 110k miles almost 2 years ago. I only had a aftermarket warranty and it had just expired. So with the help of my father who is a certified high performance boat mechanic ( think cigarette boats like in Miami vice) who has built many high HP engines before. We started the tear down and rebuild around August. I bought another blown up motor off of shop in long island. The second motor had been hydro locked at 1400 miles. I was able to save the crank and heads out of that engine to use in mine. After months of work, swearing, ordering and reordering, waiting for parts for sometimes more then 6 weeks, almost screwing up the bedplate procedure with seemingly the last tube of bedplate sealant BMW ever made. We finally had the long block built and ready for timing.... Then I saw the price for the timing tools So I had to find a BMW tech willing to do the timing job for me on the side. Finally I got the engine back in around this time last year.
We decided to use calico coated main bearings because they were the only thing in stock at the time. Other wise all OEM parts were used including rod bearings. The rod bearings plasti-gauged at 0.0125 on average if I remember correctly I will update if I find where I wrote down the actual numbers. For the first startup I talked to the tech that did the timing for me. He instructed we do the first start on conventional run it above idle until it reached running temperature and then drain and fill with the oil I would be running for the first 1000 miles and drain again. So we agreed to use Rotella 10w-40 conventional for the first start and I have been using Mobil 1 0w-40 European formula ever since. I ended up running the break in, in limp mode for many of the miles because of a faulty throttle actuator which really helped me stay away from the fun button. So as of now the car has 123,000 miles about 13,000 on the new engine. I did not send the 1000 mile sample to black stone and then I got in a small accident at about 6000 miles when I was about to change the oil. The accident damaged the oil cooler and I lost all of the oil so I had nothing for them to sample. So the first sample was sent in with about 12000 miles on the new engine. I'm very happy with how the engine runs on the lighter oil. it warms up much quicker, the engine feels as if it revs "smoother" and according to the test below it seems to be lubricating well. I do notice that oil temperatures are slightly hotter in the summer and I'm thinking about going to the Mobil 1 0-50 race when I go cat-less. I added a carnage pic as well. |

I bet your dad works on a whole bunch of Merc engines huh? I had a Merc (that's Mercury for you car only guys they make sick ass engines for offshore boats) HP 500 in my last boat which was a Fountain 29 footer.
This is the first I've heard of M1 racing 0-50.. I'm gonna look into it. Good luck with the fresh S65 build!

You might want to remove all personal information from the Blackstone report and then reattach.
