Pads only? Why not rotors? Both pads and rotors should be replaced together. You should check you rotor thickness. Minimum thickness is engraved on the rotors themselves

FFX told me it takes 4 hrs for installation, i told her if the tech needs 4 hrs to change pads he shouldn't be working there.

My wife's car says front pads have 600 miles left And I don't think we've ever changed the front rotors, and the car has 75K miles Let me know I'm in Reston, but I can come to you anytime in the weekend, if that works for you Thanks!

Don't think it would be a problem, but was joking about the 30 minutes and 200 dollar part. Do you have the parts? How much does x3 weigh? Think it's to much for my ezcarlift, limit is 4400.

I see a nice floor jack, 2 jack stands, a half inch drive ratchet, metric 1/2 drive socket set and a 1/2 drive torque wrench in your future. All less than paying someone to do this for you. Then it's $175 for pads next time. Plus you can do stuff like your oil change, too.

kmarei - did you ever swap track pads on your M3? It's no different doing the pads on the X3 (I have done both many times). The rotor is dead easy because you already have the caliper off to do the pads, and it's only one (or maybe two) Allen bolts to remove the rotor from there.
richardbb85 - if you have a garage, this really is a doable DIY for anyone who's capable of minor mechanical tasks. It's a little fiddly in a couple places, like getting the anti-rattle clips back in. So the first time you do it, set aside an afternoon, just in case it goes slowly. But after that first time, it's really easy. The how-to guides in the DIY forum are good, and Bavarian Auto has a YouTube video doing it on an earlier model BMW but not much has changed. There are differing schools of thought about whether it's necessary to do the rotors at the same time as the pads. Track guys - who are the hardest on rotors - don't change the rotors until they look like they may be developing material cracking. There are pictures in the DIY forum that will give you a clear idea what that looks like. Yes, that means we run them below minimum thickness too. It's safe because we look at our brakes and rotors at least a couple times a day when we're on the track. |
