Hi Redd, that was my assumption about 2 years ago so I replaced the thermostat. It didn’t resolve the issue like I had hoped. Now back to op thread so I don’t jack his new engine post... since he has the engine back for free it would be interesting to know if the mains are shot. If so he could probably get a few bucks for the parts off it that aren’t bad. If it didn’t spin a main then there’s options if you wanted to rebuild it through a shop with a new crank.

A tick above 210 is normal. I can get mine there but it takes longer than the 15 minute city drive to work. If I make a few detours it will run 210 which is what you want anyway to boil the water out. I just wish it did it in half the time so I could enjoy the car more.

Glad it's sorted out for you now (a few months ago now
).Are you doing oil analysis out of interest? Also, what was the score with the old engine? Did you strip the mains down?

Shit I'm in N54 gang but this car was my original dream car and still love that V8 sound. Seeing this story just sucks but seeing the outcome hopefully you have a enjoyable ride now with the replacement motor.
I was curious to know if any updates on the old motor OP? You still alive? |

His profile says he was on today.
And yes, would still like to know what the outcome was with the old engine.

Hey guys, I still have the car. refurb motor still running strong has 22k miles on it already in less than 2 years. Just got back from the tail of the dragon. The motor never skipped a beat. having a strange issue with the oil level sensor, it is horribly inaccurate, it appears to measure in whole quarts only not quarter of a quart which i believe is the norm. I even bought another new sensor and it does the same thing. It's scary because the oil will show ok at the top most level, i can dump an entire quart in and the level will never change. when it shows one bar down from the top, its actually at least a quart low at that point. I am bought an endoscope camera and am going to remove the sensor and look in the pan to see if there is any debris or something that would cause the sensor to be so far off. As for the old engine, I still have not had a chance to tear into it, so i listed it on here for sale. If it doesnt sell anytime soon, i am probably going to have to part it out and at that point, i'll tear it down and try and find out what happened.

Thanks for the update, and do update this thread if you tear it down.

I purchased the refurb engine through the BMW dealership near me. The dealership told me the engine came direct from Germany. The label on the box the engine came in also shows it was shipped from Dingolfing Germany. I had the dealership install it as well.
Not sure if you can purchase a refurb engine through the dealership and install it yourself, especially if you want to retain the warranty. |

I wonder what a refurbed engine actually means?

It was my understanding that he purchased a BMW re-manufactured engine, not a refurb.
