Both sides of the fuel tank, injectors. fuel rail. everything.
1 bar of pressure is a hell of a lot... mine currently was down .15 bar below the 3 bar target the minimum at intermittent short times(3-10 seconds). really just seems on cold starts when idling or blipping the throttle when first starting to go in say 1st gear off cold start. Id be concerned about 1 bar of pressure even after removing the filter... i have trouble imagining the filter causing that big of a drop..

Personally, I’ll be replacing the in tank fuel pump/regulator & filter, then replace the injectors. Once done, should be good for 10 yrs & no need for in-line fuel filter..

I test fitted the NRW filter but was not happy with how it sat.. would’ve been different if it were smaller in size! It’s sitting on the bench for the past year.

On a different, I’m noticing some hesitation while accelerating in 1st/2nd gear for a few seconds if I drive away without warming up for 20-30 seconds after a morning cold start.. anyone else experiencing something similar?
Funnily enough, by the sound of it, I had this exact issue. You can read my thread about it if you like. My symptoms started like yours, then gradually crept up the eng. temp range. Replacing the spark plugs cured it for me.

There are countless needless products on the market. Catch cans are another pet peeve of mine. Any product that adds complexity to an already functional system is a problem in my book. Too many "cash grab" vendors popping up on social media trying to make a quick buck under the guise of "helping the community". We're uniquely positioned to observe the fallout of such products...It's enough to make us salty.

In the context of fuel filtration...In thousands of M3's through my shop I can count on one hand how many were injector failures that caused major damage. There is sufficient filtration in the system. With the exception of Diesels, hardly any BMW (or other Euro brands) in the last 20 years have had a separate fuel filter- that's many millions of cars produced. Injector failures in S65 cars were usually obscure failures that wouldn't have been resolved by better filtration.

If you believe filtration is a problem and want additional protection, we recommend sourcing EV14 filter buckets for inside each injector. There's no money in that though....Guys with an expensive CNC machine have to crank out different and shiny products to keep their machines busy.
Re your 1st point, agreed, which is why I did a DIY instal under the body, where BMW puts the diesel fuel filters (and the petrol filters for the Chinese variants, non M AFAIK for the e9x).
Being a mechanic myself for over 30 years I've made the exact same argument as you, tank filters have worked fine for over 20 years on all sorts of cars. And I don't recall replacing a (petrol port) injector due to mechanical/debris issues.

That said I began collecting more data on S65 engine failures due to failed injectors, I began to find lots of cases on FB UKM3V8 FB group not previously recorded here, with those it's 25 so far (I haven't searched all the way back yet, and nor have I yet searched the US M3 FB group).

Whilst I appreciate that's a very small number of all M3's out there, or even just the ones in the UK & US, the results are usually catastrophic. Out of 30 cars affected by injector failures, 25 ruined the engine.
Also, although early days for the stats (i.e only 30 so far, and not all noted cyl no), their is a small clustering of injector failures around cyls 6 & 7, the fuel feed is between them (as you probably remember).
Those 2 points they gave me enough doubt that made me decide to fit a fuel filter after all last week (I've already replaced the injectors).
Parts for mine only cost £90, and I haven't cluttered the engine bay

Btw, of the small numbers of injector failures on the S65s you've had, do you recall which cylinders they were on? And mileages?

I wanted to fall onto my own sword here and update you all on my saga. I blamed the fuel sensor and the NRW filter for my issues, but in fact my problems were caused by another stupid blunder.

I ordered the fuel conveyer assembly for a regular 3 series, not M3. This assembly consists of a regulator, a fuel level sensor and some pipes that siphon the fuel across the saddle into the other side (passenger side here in the states where the pump resides). The assemblies are visually IDENTICAL, but the pressure regulator stops around 5 bar, not the 6 needed for the M3. At WOT, I was down near 1 bar of fuel via ISTA diags and this was the root cause, most likely not the NRW fuel filter. So, i'm an idiot.

"Confession is good for the soul"

Joke aside...good to determine root cause(s) and fix for issue noted.
Since remedied 'true issue', let us know if decide to give NRW filter another go.

Yea maybe. i hate working on fuel systems. Always a smelly disgusting mess. But the removal was quite easy. It's a well engineered kit, although I didn't like the tension it put on the stock lines. Felt a bit under prepared. I think it was trying too hard to look cool vs. be more practical. I can probably design my own for way less which I think others have done here, under the car, etc.
