Freedom of speech is guaranteed by the US Constitution and applies to US citizens who would like to criticize the Government, etc. without fear of retribution. Freedom of speech does not apply to private businesses and car forums.
For starters, you're British and have no US rights. But even if you were, the 1st Amendment to our Constitution doesn't apply to a private entity such as a car forum. But even with that said, nobody is trying to muzzle you. I like seeing you make up stories while refusing to explain them. That serves my purpose far more than keeping you silent. |

I have read all of Regular Guy's research postings and threads, even before my engine went south, and I have to say that we should be grateful that he took the time and data- presenting it in the way of non-bias and evidence based approach as he did...
I also agree that knock detection system on the E92 M3, and including the E46 M3, are too sensitive to allow for that much detonation to spin bearings.. I could see one crank revolution of knock before the ecm would pull back enough timing to stop it before the next engine revolution, if even that much... Its not enough to cause the substantial damage we are seeing to not just only the upper halves but also the lower halves of the bearings as well... I am also certain that if detonation were the issues with these cars we would certainly see more cavities or tiny craters on top of the pistons, which we have not seen... Regular Guy at least has us all heading in the right direction based on the evidence to isolating the problems with our rod bearings... His research has at least eliminated all but a few problems that appear to be contributing to this bearing issue... Tolerance stacking/Bearing clearances, Oil Supply/Pressure, and Oil properties... Could be a little bit of all of them or just one, but at least we have a better idea of where to apply our preventative applications... I knew a long time ago when I started getting into european muscle cars that they would come with a higher price and sacrifice... I have been driving M3's for the last 10 years, and I must say that I still think the E92 M3 is the pinnacle of the product line, even despite getting my ass handed to me two months ago when my bearings disintegrated... I still love this car and its qualities, so I am thankful that someone took the time and research to at least come up with a formidable measure to figuring out exactly what is causing the bearing issues in the M3s and M5s... ![]() |

I'm sorry people are so dismissive of detonation as a least being a contributor to failure. We have seen the pictures that speak for themselves:
1. Upper bearing shells showing more wear which would coincide with detonation pushing the (little) oil film that's left out of the bearing shell area causing the wear noted. 2. I myself hear/heard knocking from several different cars from bad 93 octane gas. The super knock detection system obviously wasn't pulling timing quickly enough as it should. Remember, audible knock is very bad as it should be corrected by the DME before by ears hear it. |

On another note, I wonder what the spark plug maintenance has been on engines with extreme wear, as well as their condition when the engine was taken down.

It's evidence vs anecdotal experience. Are you in the medical field? The systematic approach is pretty impressive.
Fwiw after finding out about the bearing issue I ended up buying extended warranty when originally didn't plan on it. Quote:

your thread on getting your engine replaced and your comment on third party vs BMW warranty was what convinced me to get it.
to your patience and perseverance.
