Actually, your previous reports don't tell any story for a bearing change need either, aluminum is low across the board.

Whoops, I've read to many of these threads to keep count of who replaced what with what. Only read the last 2 pages. Still, which ARP bolts, there are a few variations?

You are right my previous reports didn't say anything. It was the drop in oil pressure and raise in engine temp that prompted me to went ahead and do it. By success, I mean I didn't screw up the process of changing the bearing and causing some abnormal wear. It is afterall the first time I did something this involve with an engine.

I used ARP2000 as there were some concerns with some forum members regarding the 625. I only found 2 places that sell these as ARP never released a kit with the ARP2000 for the S65. I contacted multiple vendors and ARP directly to check this. Here was the post I put in the other thread regarding the 2 and the torque spec:

Castrol 10W60 with 15K oil change intervals, would not have produced pristine bearings like this.

Lower oil change intervals like OP's also proves why none of the track guys in the track section see bearing issues. They most likely have bearings that look like OP's!

The bad BMW engines must have been assembled during bayern munich games!
I'm a track guy with way more frequent oil changes and mine blew up. So no I wouldn't agree.

Can't tell if serious... That logic would escape me if so. I've instructed for BMWCCA, Chin, Midwest Domestics etc. I think I qualify to call myself a track guy.

I think its good to at least cut the recommended interval in half. I know there were times when I had a track weekend and barely 500 miles on a change. Its good peace of mind.

When she's ready to go though, I don't think anything is gonna stop it.

Here is my latest report with 2 oil changes after the rod bearing change. Some observation after getting through the summer and driving 2 hrs+ in 100+ heat. Coolant temp and oil temp definitely have dropped from before the bearing change. My coolant temp never went pass 200 degree even in 100+ degree heat in the summer. It was hitting 210 even when outside temp was only 58 degree before the bearing change. That's a pretty big swing. I didn't change the coolant nor did any bleeding since the bearing change for those that think there is air in the system. Oil pressure stays pretty constant right around 40 during idle as well. Just some observation and data points.

So this car is averaging 25k miles per year ... very impressive. You had zero wear before the swap and so far very good too. I wonder whether the garage queens are suffering bearing wear. Cars with extremely high mileage are performing exceptionally well while cars with low mileage seem to suffer BF. Any thoughts experts?

Thanks. I am still puzzled as to this whole bearing issue and where is the line between acceptable wear. Clearly my own bearing seem to be in relatively good shape compare to others. Although I can tell the bearings are worn to different layers in person which don't really show up well in the pictures. But they all worn very evenly with a different pattern between 1-4 and 5-8. It was really the spike in the oil/coolant temp that spooked me into changing the bearing back at 86k. And so far, the bearing change seems to have taken care of that 'problem' as far as I can tell. I might just have been lucky with one of the engine with the better clearance? I love this car and engine nonetheless. cheers guys!

It's interesting that you're seeing tin wear after your rod bearing change. Is that break-in of the new bearings? You didn't have any prior to the change. I wish I had the oil history of my engine prior to 46k miles, because I have 0 tin readings across the board since then, up to 99k miles.

yup, I think that's what it is. My first oil change at 7500 miles had similar tin reading and then just died off in the next one. Like you, I wish I had the 1200 reading actually but I am missing that one.

You might not be aware of this, but there are now vehicles with over 200k miles on the original bearing:

Most of the bearing issues that happen on low mileage vehicles have to do with engine assembly at the plant. As long as the engine was assembled according to procedures, oem bearings are essentially a lifetime component.

This is what most of the bad bearings look like on our cars (below).
