If you are doing your rod bearing and for some reason is not following this excellent guide (thanks SYT_Shadow!), and instead is using the Turner or ECS Tuning "BMW S65 WPC Treated Rod Bearing Kit Installation Guide" I would like to point out an error in them. They have both got the routing of the A/C belt is wrong: page 34 (ECS Tunings guide) or page 32 (Turner Motorsports guide).

ECS Tuning pdf file
Turner pdf file

This should be the correct way:

I just did this but only pulled the belt off the tensioner. Could not figure out what you meant here but now I understand. You are saying the text is wrong for the year. I would have to go look at this on my 2011. The guides were very handy to have on hand, if the text is wrong good to know if you removed the belt completely. I didn't even take the fan out, just lifted, held with a. Bungee.

Agree, it was a great guide to have when reassembling the engine!
In my case I took the A/C belt off as I wanted to clean up the block as well as replacing one of the pulleys. Didn't pay attention to the A/C belt routing when removing it prior to doing the rod bearings. Thought it was great that the routing was covered in the Turner + ECS guides. But they got it wrong - cars up to May 15 2008 have the belt routed on top of the power steering pump pulley. Cars produced after May 15 2008 has the belt routed under the power steering pump pulley.

Just went to check mine, yes the .pdf text for the belt is wrong, mine is 2011. It goes over the top of the idler pulley.

Weird that both got it wrong - one looked in the others instructions..🙃 - and what if it would be routed the wrong way, AC goes mad?

Can't say about AC, but power steering makes the steering very hard. A friend tested not intendedly.

No need for sport coding of the steering...

The power steering pump will not do its job. The PS pump for cars up to May 2008 is 32412283041 and runs clockwise (looking from the front of the car) while the PS pump after May 2008 is 32412283002/32412283003 and runs counterclockwise.

Finally replaced the bearings with BE. Thanks to SYT_Shadow for the great DIY. The ECS guide was also very useful. I don't think the bearings were in good shape considering the milage.

I'm glad it was helpful, enjoy the peace of mind now that you have the right bearings in there!

Glad it has the right bearings and you're good to go!

Yes they seem like can go for another 100k and wont have problem. very decently looking bearings. But now i definitely have the peace of mind after replacing with BE.

I can't remember how I did the first time I changed the bearings, but this time I had to detach the gearbox oil pipes to force them off and insert the E12 socket on that bolt.

Decided to replace that bolt for another one with Hex head, so I can undo it with an open ended wrench.

The blue arrow is the oem one, the red is the one I put in place, the yellow was an allen head, and the green was a shorter hex head and shorter lenght.

Ideal thing would be the green arrow bolt with oem lenght, because its shorter head would fit a box wrench, and I could do the "good and tight" torque. But I couldn't find that head with original lenght.

The bigger hex head, although it's got the original lenght, won't fit a box wrench, only open ended.

Between the two options, I think it's better to have more threads, than more torque, if you know what I'm saying.

I've never removed the gearbox oil piping to access those bolts. A 10mm open ended wrench, on the 'closed' side of the wrench, is able to turn those bolts adequately

of course this means torque will be 'good and tight'

I was afraid of damaging the head and then having even more trouble.

I remember those trans lines for sure. PITA location.

IIRC a 3/8" 12 point box end wrench fits better than a 10mm on those trans bolts. Worked great for me when I did my bearings. Just re-installed them guttentight.

What do you guys mean by a box wrench? Ring spanner or a socket? lol

Anyway, can't remember for sure what I did, but I do own some torx spanners.

I used a gearwrench wrench, on one side it has a 10mm open ended wrench and in the other side it has a round 6pt socket which grabs onto the etorx quite well. I think it comes out on a photo
