When I got to ~1,500 miles the engine got its first track day. Have done 11 days on it since.

I'm not a big believer in these break in periods either, just citing the factory manual. First thing I did after getting my RBs done was redline it when it hit 212F Feel like a part of me is missing when my car is in the shop

I imagine that break in periods are just a leftover precaution from when manufacturing and production wasn't as advanced as it is today. Better oiling / filtering, good CNC milling, better practices have probably made break-in periods much less necessary.

here are the factory break-in procedures pulled from the supplementary manual that was luckily right by my desk:

1200 miles - do not exceed 5,500 rpm or 105 mph. Do not [floor it].

1200 to 3000 - no rpm indicated, do not exceed 135mph. Use maximum acceleration for only brief moments, e.g. when passing.

Do not use Launch Control.

Missed that procedure. After 1200mls I was lapping at the Nurburgring, car still pulls despite 105k on the motor. Maybe I got lucky.

BMW NA replaced my blown E46 M3 engine when I had about 40k miles on it. I got a loaner 330 or 335 for 6 weeks, and when I sold the car with about 110k on the car but only 70k on the engine, it was a selling point. The guy who bought it said he wouldn't have bought it if it still had the original engine.

That the free new engine and see what kinda loaner you can get!

Did they ever tell you what failed on the old engine? Mains taking rod bearings out, or just rod bearings failed?

Glad you're engine was covered by warrantee , I would take it easy for 1200 miles to be on the safe side.
Btw, if they said it was run in already, did they also say then it doesn't need a 1200 mile oil change?

Defend the brand until my deathbed but I had a E30 vert and a 325 ci
Both were hella reliable and I did all of my own maintenance and I joined this fourum to get the lowdown

Ventured off with a bunch of different brands over the years and have been itching to get back in to a BMW particularly this platform and the S65/S85 motor but man these horror Stories seem horrible

Post investigation it was the rod bearings.

Thanks for the follow up. About how long was your car in the shop? Seems that you got a great result. Was this purchased from a BMW dealer?

Was with the AD for about two weeks.
Car was bought from AD with a 2 year warranty. Had the car 3 days before the bearings went.
