I have run many tanks of gas through the car with the problem. A buddy who races dirt bikes said California has been putting in more ethanol and that may be it. I tried blending super unleaded with 100 octane unleaded. I think I picked up a few horsepower but didn't fix the idle problem. The race gas here is over $9 a gallon, ouch. Don't know if it threw any codes.
I used to build race engines over 20 years ago. My normal routine with something like this is change the spark plugs, clean the throttle bodies. Had a similar issue with my first Toyota Tundra, an independent said I needed a throttle position sensor, I cleaned everything out, new spark plugs and it was perfect. The problem with dealership mechanics is flat rate, they get paid x hours for a job so there is incentive to rush it. If I have them clean the throttle bodies they will spray carb cleaner in with the motor running. That washes down the cylinder walls with the crap which isn't good for the engine. If I want it done right I think I have to do it myself.

Sorry to bump an old thread.
If anybody is researching this problem and has the following observations: • fluctuating idle problem (down to 400 RPM, up to 1100 RPM, back down to 400 RPM, up to 1100 RPM, etc etc continuously) • you notice or can re-create the problem after filling up with gas and then sitting idle for a few minutes • also have the problem under other circumstances • the problem isn’t related to cold starts Then it is extremely likely your “fuel tank vent valve” aka “fuel tank breather valve” needs replacing. Replacing that fixed the fluctuating idle problem for me and others. See this thread called "E92 M3 Erratic Idle After Fill-Up": http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=953477 Last edited by RogEphedra; 01-05-2015 at 12:37 PM.. Reason: Format my post better |

I have the same symptom. Changed idle control valve, didn't work. Updated to latest software, didn't work. No codes. Still trying to figure out the cause...
The "bouncing" occurs as the engine transitions from the catalyst heating phase to normal map. After that, runs completely normal. |

I had the same problem with pending rpm, not only during cold start. I checked for codes and found out that I had a bad acceleratorpedal. I changed the whole module and the car has been running fine since I changed it. Knock on wood!
Hope this can be helpful! //Andersson |

To re-revive an old thread... the fluctuating rpm can be replicated if you blip the throttle 55+ seconds into a cold start (car parked overnight). Still no clue of why it happens... No code whatsoever.

Guys, I had same issue. Changed spark plugs---GONE.
We all forget just how magical a part the spark plugs play, it's the reason along with the intake it's the one part no one goes aftermarket. This engine is INCREDIBLY smart at protecting itself and running outside perfect scenarios. Just another reminder of how incredibly special this engine is. Cheers, e46e92
