Confirmed, main bearing #1 failure. The bearing didn't even spin, but the block is cracked at the oil port all the way up to the bores. Terrifying considering the engine ran perfectly fine and didn't have much of a noise besides a slight knock.

I'm afraid I don't have a clue how to.
Can't you copy and paste the op to achieve that?

![]() I don't suppose you can use a piston from the other engine? Thanks for LMK anyway (btw, do you know what year and miles its done?).

M3 UK 103k miles. Not supercharged. Engine went for rocket gasket and found r/h vanoss exhaust spring not in the correct position (unknown reason). Both vanos covers where missing. On the l/h found both cracked.
Found them on the sump and plastic particles found on rod bearings too. Engine requires rebuild. It didn't blow up but it was close to. https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2114569 |

Thanks for the heads up, will add your case to the list when I've read more about it.
Sorry to hear about your engine trouble btw .Out of curiosity, are you a member at m3cutters too? (a UK M3 forum). If you haven't yet found a place to sort out your engine or a replacement, some people there will probably be able to recommend someone.

Here he shows that a piston has broken up and the rod out of place. In his next video he shows the big end of the rod broken off in pieces, but its crank journal looks clean! Looks to me like a rod bolt worked loose (or less likely, broke). In his last update about the car (that I could find) 6 months ago, he talks only about getting a replacement engine. So we're not likely to find a certain cause for the failure. And as Spammy mentioned, no8 has some bore scoring. Added to undetermined/uncertain list.

Assimilator1 Matt at REPerformance had his engine melt pistons whilst on a trip to visit the Ring. Incident didn’t happen on track. They just did a video on it for YouTube a couple days ago. REPerformace Matt’s M3

They posted an update today. The engine is completely scrapped. Piston was destroyed to the point where there was only a rod and pin in the cylinder.

Ah yea, I did see that, so they believe that a weak mixture melted the piston over time, then a piece of the piston broke off breaking a valve and entirely destroying the piston.
They state that no EML illuminated for the weak mixture (which would be concerning for all of us!). That explanation for the piston breaking up seems odd to me. I would've thought that if indeed there's a marginally weak mixture (enough to cause damage) then the piston would be slowly eroded/melted until either the piston is holed and compression lost, or piston lands melted and compression lost. But my experience/knowledge with engines failing in this manor is limited, am I missing more unusual failures?

Now added to the list, in the 'other' failures list.
