"Evo magazine has posted a three-way comparison of the Mercedes-Benz C55 AMG, the Audi RS4 and BMW M3 CS. In the end, reviewer Jethro Bovingdon comes close to picking the RS4, but ends up crowning the M3 the winner. Bovingdon writes: "No surprises then. It comes down to RS4 and M3 CS. After ten minutes behind the wheel the RS4 was my winner. It's got the looks, the interior, the edge on performance. Forty-eight hours later, the deft balance, awesome adjustability and sheer exuberance of the M3 CS seemed insurmountable. It gives you so many options, and I don't just mean you can oversteer it all day long (which you can). It has incredible balance, and it's so responsive to your inputs that you feel intimately involved through every part of every corner. For you and me, that's what really counts. The M3 is still the all-conquering action hero. Did I mention there's a new one later this year?" Recently, Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear said he thought the RS4 was better than the M3. "

That is the old S4 in that 2003 car review. New version of the S4 (B7) is is a naturally aspirated V8, and it's 4 wheel drive system is set up with a 60:40 bias to the rear.

AWD is very poor for weight distribution with a large V8.
The whole engine sits in front of the axel not good. Subaru can get away with it due do the boxer engine being mounted low and is only half as long as the Audi V8 |

Who cares?
They are both amazing rides...why worry if one car "owns" the other...just enjoy whatever you have!! I'm sure RS4 is sweet...and everyone knows that even if the RS4 "owns" the e46M3, e90M3 will "own" this RS4...then the next RS4 will again "own" the e90M3...FYI, cars like anything else, is a neverending story, try to appreciate your ride.
Forget those IS350 vs. 330i or M3 vs. xxx topic...

well said beckham23...people should just focus on their own rides and not bash other vehicles. I currently own an A4 which is slower than SOME civics and hyundai but I love the quattro feel. However, I'm leaving for audi and going back to BMW...
Audi/Bmw's both have their pro's and con's. |

Its true E46 M3CS has more balance and tactility/agility, I believe a recent issue of Speed (R&T) rated it the most driftable production car (again testament to the car's balance)...but the RS4 is a departure from old S-line Audis...for starters the quattro is now rear-biased (think evo/skyline) and I believe they gave the steering more feel (previous Audi stuff were criticized for wooden steering). The same changes have worked their way into the upcoming V10 Gallardo powered S8.
