LM 10w60 is not 3.5, it's probably 5.3. Many manufacturers simply print ">3.5" for any of their 40-weight and heavier oils.

Thank you for clearing that up - it seemed very odd given LM has a high viscosity. Cheers,

I've been trying to find out how the Castrol compares to Mobil 10w-60 I can get here in the UK. The Mobil's HTHS is 5.7.

I was a little worried about the 0W40 after 2 track days but it was fine. They said I could go 10,000 miles and should be fine. .

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

0w40 to 10w60 is just fine for the S65 for daily use. Perhaps there is a benefit at a hot racetrack to run 10w60 but if that were the case, why does the Porsche GT3 come with a 0w40 factory fill?

Because it was designed around that oil, much like the S65 was designed around 10w60. There is still an element of marketing behind it...the divorce of BMW and Castrol was a huge deal.

The S65 designed for 10w/60? Maybe that was their intent but it didn't work out well!

I personally would run Redline 5W50 or Motul 5W50 Sport, and change after 5-7.5K. |

Redline probably performs at its best when used from new (after breakin) in an engine with healthy seals.
Nowadays I stop worrying about it and just use BMW TT 10W60 with Ceratec/MoS2.

If an oil is API certified, it is safe to mix with any other API oil. Why mix? Good question.

Those two oil I mentioned as an example will have different base stock, and molecules are basically work independent of each other. Redline is bit different. All Redline performance oils have same base stock, so mixing them might give certain desirable weight. As for API, API requires oil to be "safely" mixed. That does not mean performance will be increased. It just means engine will not suffer some problem. And yes, questions is: why? Plenty options to get what one wants from get go. |

Didn't you have a thread on this already regarding the trans? Or am I confusing you with someone else.

I don't feel the need to add to the chemistry in Redline HP motor oil, esp. considering the levels of ZDDP. I don't want anything interfering with it, in the heat of the engine...

Oil is already mixed appropriately. If LM knows how to mix oil better than anyone else, they would not offer such mediocre products in the first place. I worked on oil testing, and we were testing LM for comparison. It falls into the category of "afterthought oils." But, their Made in Germany sign in front is too much to resist |

They were the first to jump on the hydrocracked train in 90's. Their current lineup is worse than ANY Euro oil one can find in Wal-Mart. Valvoline 5W40 European Vehicles, Quaker State Euro 5W40, all would be a better choice than anything LM.
