VA Yearly Car Tax
Just curious, for anyone that bought an M3. They usually cost around 70k out the door and I am trying to figure out how much the first Car Tax payment might be (Not the one when you buy the car but the yearly tax on owning a car/Property Tax). Of course its pro-rated, so looking for someone who paid for almost a years worth of taxes on the car come October 1st.
I bought my car in December so just curious how much the State is going to hit me up for come October... Did I mention I hate this damn car tax! |

there is a ratio Virginia uses. For every 100$ of assessed value of your car, it is $4.57 in FFX county.
instead of posting here, try a google search or go to the State/County website http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dta/car...orvehicles.htm

First year I had it, it was real close to $190 a month, and they valued the car more than what I bought it for. This is for ffx county, I think PW is a little cheaper.

i don't know how you guys accept this. I come from a place where there's no such thing as property taxes on cars....It's just crazy, it's like a entire payment of a seperate car.

my first car when i came to the states was a Chrysler Crossfire and it was a lease so i explained to her that the definition of property, is something you own i did not own the car, it was the same as renting a car no go when uncle sam wants money, he gets money

It is insane, not only are you taxed when you buy the car but you get taxed as long as you own it. i predict all in all ill be paying about 6-7k in taxes over the life of the car, from initially buying it to this insane property tax.

^ I know, I did the calc, and I was like UNREAL!! it's as if they don't want you to buy a car at all.
Plus all the hybrid drivers get a pass on their taxes. So you tell me why a Escalade hybrid somehow is more "fuel efficient" than a Civic? Doesn't make sense. |

folks - this is why it sometimes pays to have cars registered out of state
you'll see some of the C&C crew in Great Falls with their high end cars (Ferraris, etc) registered out of state, like Florida or even Montana lol

I wish I could use my second home in FL . It will save me like $4k since I have a 2009 M3 and a 2011 X5. Such a big bill at the end of the year really hurts. -SZ |

But I thought in VA you don't pay that much taxes on income right?
In MD it's about 25-30% average also we don't have property taxes on cars but houses. One way or the other uncle Sam will get his $$$. |

I mean NoVa is a weird place. I work for one of the large consulting firms and have to work here. I mean really no place else for my market. So I try to reverse psychology it. Hey, if I can afford huge car taxes (my wife's car is actually MORE expensive because it's two years newer) AND huge property taxes I must be doing something right. Someone has to pay for Roanake I say that to myself as I write the checks and pound scotch to dull the pain
