hah...good ol irvine bmw
Irvine BMW quoted me @ around $1550 in May of 2010...Unfortunately all of the orange county bmw dealerships (and all stealerships) are "out to screw you" on work they outsource 99% of the time, as previous posters stated. Do not even bother with the nameless Goliath of the 55...
I had my windshield replaced by Sterling for $1200 and even that was a rip off but whatever, insurance paid for it with a $100 deductible. It turns out all the OC dealers outsource the work to guess who...SAFELITE...who will install the same OEM glass for ya for $550-$600. If you have to go out of pocket go the safelite route direct...unless you want a $1200 loaner car for the day. Oh ya, and ditch Geico, its a bad insurance company...as are most who heavily advertise on TV/Radio for some reason. USAA or Ameriprise (via Costco)...ameriprise will run a soft hit on yer credit to asses the risk FYI. -bubu |

Wow. WTF. UK here. Paid Autoglass £70 (insurance xs) to replace mine but the invoice cost was only about £350. Proper tint, rain sensor. All good.

The OEM windshield with rain sensor has a list price of $541 - sold for less at many dealers (http://goo.gl/hxOgh).
It takes about 90 minutes to install. If they are truly charging you $1000 for labor I may need to rethink my line of work.

And the worst part is that, at least at my dealer, they subcontract safelite to do the work any way!! My dealer's price wasn't as bad as the OP's but no sense paying the middle man when you can go directly to safelite...
We needed to replace the windshield on my wife's X5 before the lease ended and my SA was honest enough to tell us this. And according to the guy who does the lease return inspections, the windshield does not need to be OEM for a lease return.

Did you just assume that you'll pay the $500 deductible? Cause I believe the windshield replacement does not require you to pay deductible. Just ask Gieco.

Short story is USAA insurance is dishonest at best and thieves at worst. (USAA banking is awesome though)

A week after I got my car some Private hit in on post and scratched/dented the rear bumper and driver's side rear wheel (nice gash down the side). After we filed the police report, I called USAA up and they said to take it to the dealer and get a quote and get them to fax the quote to them. After that they called me back, said to drop it off for repairs. I didn't pay a dime. Most insurance companies won't do anything until they see the police report, or they make you pay the deductible then refund you the money later when the police report comes in. USAA authorized the repairs the next day and let me drop it off. Not sure why so much hate for USAA

Safelite is not oem glass. Mainly they use XTG which is Chinese glass. I think M3s use Plinkerton or something like that.
Safelite does offer a good service at a great price and I wouldn't hesitate to use it, but if someone is looking for OEM, look elsewhere.

safelite can use oem glass
...actually u235, SAFELITE will use OEM glass if you request it. It'll cost more than their "genero glass" but still half the price of the dealership.

Also if you have Geico, get Mechanical Break Down added to your car, it automatically includes glass at a $50 deductible and extend the warranty (if you have a 2011) to 7 yrs/100k see here for more info (it doesn't list the glass in the description, because its not available in a few states, but it is in CA, you can call for more info): Geico.com Kory |
