brake job on 2009 m3...
so i used to be a ford tech for years...but now that my m3 is out of warranty i need to replace the front brakes according to my navigation thing telling me too..lol..
anyway.. can someone guide me on doing this job? i know that the rotors and pads you replace all at once, and theres also sensors that need to be replaced as well, ive never worked on a bmw before, im sure its pretty basic stuff, but to start, how does the rotors even come off? lol... (may seem lke a dumb question, but id rather be safe then sorry) |

Depends on if you actually need to change your brakes.
The software has two levels of alert - one is proactive based on scheduled maintenance intervals, and the other is a true alert making you aware that the brake pads sensors detect that the pads are low (a physical reaction) Best case scenario - you just need to change pads (assuming they are indeed getting low) Worst case - you need pads, sensors, and rotors (because they are below minimum thickness). |

ooo ok i see....so being that the last time it went in for brakes they replaced the front rotors and pads, so this time around i would imagine i just probably have to change the pads..and the rears, ill probably have to replace the rotors and pads..ill just get the specs and measure the rotors to make sure everything is ok....how do you reset the software after the brake change???
and also, how does the rotor come off? lol Last edited by kwike92; 01-11-2011 at 11:32 PM.. |

All I know, that you replace both pads and rotors at the same time. Due to uneven wear on the rotors, it could cause the pads to even wear out faster. I stand corrected but that's what I've been told in my automotive class and that's what we do when we change brakes on the HMMWV (you guys call it Hummers lol).... But who knows, BMW are just trying to get more dough lol.

Did a pad and rotor change, its about as straight forward as any other brake job. The sensor is a quick 3 minute change when the caliper is off.
PM me if you have any questions. You will need a torx screwdriver to pull the screw that holds the rotor to the hub assembly. Thats about it for fancy tools. |

Can u get away with the old sensor when changing pads or it need to be replaced? Shop manual say that is must be replace cause when the old one is removed in wont clip back.
