Unless rev limit was increased thru a tune (Shady said it wasn't), it's the same thing: only way to overrev the engine is with a 'money shift'. Having said that, it's NOT the same overrevving by 100 rpm than by 1,000.
Hey Shady, my car happens to have a build date of Jun 08 too . I plan to keep my car longer than warranty if I feel relatively confident I won't have major problems with it. By the time I have to make that decision, there'll be a ton more M3s with 40K+ miles to help me make it. The good news is I only drive it like 5K miles a year, but I'd eventually get there. Take care. |

So, what if it's a cold morning. You start the car to go to work. The moving "redline" on the tach says, let's say, 6K. You get right onto the on-ramp and are bit too eager on the throttle and you blow past 6K. My questions are:
1. Will the rev-limiter kick in at this lowered "cold" red line? 2. If the rev-limiter doesn't cut in and only works at 8400 rpm then will going past the lowered "red line" on the tach be counted as an over rev? 3. If it is counted as an over rev I don't see how they can blame any sort of bent valve, let alone a broken valve sping on this. Can they? Just wondering. Cheers.

Update car is fixed again cause of limp mode electronic fuel vaccume pump fuse went bad cause car to go into limp mode. . Going to send my wife to pick up the car again. Ooooops hold that thought Stealership just called me back car is getting sent back to the body shop door is not fixed perfect wife said she could still see a slight dent in door still. I think they are worried I will be pissed if I see anything ding, dent or damage still to my door . I don't play when it comes to my "M3"

good luck man, sounds like you need some!
Any more details on what specifically happened to the valve spring? You said it came off, what do you mean by that? Did the valvespring break? Retainer break? They can come up with countless possible failure modes related to inadequate oil temperatures/operating temperatures, and even if they aren't very likely it'd be impossible to prove them completely wrong without having other people with the same problem pointing a finger at BMW. |

Damn Shady. That's really messed up. I really hope it's all sorted out soon. But it's good to know that last thing was just a fuse. Sheesh. Good luck.
Cheers.

I too am concerned that the dealer said there was an over-rev when there was no money shift. There's no way to over-rev the motor if it wasn't mechanical. Bouncing on the rev limiter is not an over-rev. In fact some of my launch control launches have hit the limiter before or during the shift.

^ crazy part is, all the 2008's are bumping close to the car's warranty peroid. Alot of us myself included dont' have anything close to 50k miles on it yet.

I hope things go up from here for you. Nothing worse than seeing one of your favorite possessions being treated poorly by others who have nothing vested in it. My sympathies...

So sorry for all the trouble you've had... what a nightmare..
I am particularly interested in what they said pertaining to the over -rev. Have you ever shifted to the wrong gear and went upwards of 8500 rpm? What did the computer log? What RPM and for what duration? I am pretty worried about this happening to me... My car is an earlier build 12/2007 and I just hit 30K miles on it the other day. I have never had any engine issues, engine malfunction, check engine lights, or anything like that. It's always runs like a dream.. I would have a heart attack if it had to go to the dealer for engine work... |

The ECU is a very sophisticated unit and does far more logging than you think it does. Even the ECU in the E46 330 will record this information. I hope this is an isolated incident although I'm starting to wonder... |

By how much was the over rev? You never said? That is very relevant. Springs don't break on over revs anyway so who are they kidding. Typical BMW warranty. Always trying to blow you off.
Sounds like they damaged the door after telling you no warranty and had second thoughts knowing they had to phone you with the bad news on the door. Easier to say ok warranty is fine now..... phone a few days later....hey btw we damaged your door. These guys are BS. Fancy treating you like that. They should have been straight with you to begin with instead of looking for a way out of it. I've had similar experiences with BMW warranty. Their warranty sucks. |

I too have an 08 with about 22k miles and only had one case of a limp mode about a year ago and nothing since then. I was accelerating on an on ramp and suddenly I lost power. I pulled over, turned the car off, waited about 5min, and everything was fine. I sincerely hope that this isn't a sign.

This thread and the other thread in the maintenance section are quite disturbing. I have a 12/07 build date and about 43k miles on my car. I have hit the rev limiter about three times because each time, I was having too much fun in second gear and the engine revs so smoothly I didn't realize i was at redline.
Warranty is running out and I'm trying to decide whether I should get the extended warranty. Sounds like it would be a good idea given this potential issue.... |

^ how much is the cheapest and shortest drivetrain warranty? I presume you bought your car and didn't lease it?
http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...rotection.aspx anyways, the costs increases drastically and the amount of coverage decreases drastically the moment your car is out of the original warranty and then you decide to purchase the extended warranty. Last edited by mdosu; 04-05-2011 at 11:58 AM.. |
