E46 ///M3 vs E92 ///M3!!!
Since there are LOTS of lovers and haters for the E92 M3 on BMW forums, I was VERY curious to see what others thought in order to get unbiased answers and opinions. I asked lots of people around me (friends and girlfriends), posted it up on various online forums, and even a MySpace bulletin asking which one they liked more. This is the original thread/bulletin I posted up:
"So what do you folks think? The new 2008 E92 ///M3 debuted a couple days ago at the Geneva show. Some people love it and some people hate it. Some say they like the new look and some say the E46 M3 is classic. Pictures and Info can be found here: 2008 BMW E92 ///M3 Trade in my E46 M3 for one? Or keep mine and keep modding? I only have 5700 miles on my ///M3 so it's pretty much brand new. What do you guys think? Pictures of MY car and info can be found here: 2005 Alpine White E46 BMW ///M3 Give me some feedback. Thanks a bunch!" Guess what? I've gotten TONS of resposes from many many girls and guys. People who were and were not into cars. Just alot of different people's opinion other than BMW fanatics for unbiased answers. I was curious to see what they felt. About 80-90% of the responses were that they STILL liked the E46 M3 much better. They all told me to keep it and NOT to trade it in for the new E92 M3. Most of them thought the new one looked ugly, like a whale or not as nice as the E46. They all pretty much said that the E46 M3 has the true classic image of BMW. I still have alot of their replies saved. This tells me that still the majority of people like the E46 M3 over the E92 M3. So for all you E46 M3 owners who want to "throw away" your E46 M3 or feel bad because your E46 is the last gen model now... don't feel bad because your car is still the SH*T and the majority of people STILL prefer the E46 over the E92.

Yup imagine when the E92 M3s are running around town... I'm ordering mine!
I don't think the current E46 M3 will turn out to be a classic, unless u have the CSL version. E30 M3 is the classic. |

I don't really care what other people think, it's what I think about the E92 that counts, I'm the one paying for it. I love the E92. I'm not going to base a $60,000 decision on other peoples likes/dislikes.

A decently equipped 335i is around 45k. Add 2k to install and paint an m5 style or mtech bodykit. Add another 2k for suspension upgrades. Add another 1500 for Procede. Add another 2-3k for bigger wheels and wider tires. Add another 2k for better brakes (m3 caliber brakes). Add another 4k for lsd installed. That puts you at around 59k to get a 335i to match the m3. The m3 msrp is going to be around 55-59k Maybe 67k optioned out. With the m3 you get a wider front and rear body that would cost an arm and leg to do on a 335. You get an overall better performing car around a track or in general. You get an N/A v8 that sounds mean and throaty, and you get a 4 year 50k mile waranty. Imagine an intake and exhaust on the m3. Keep the waranty and gain about 20 hp. 440-450 hp v8. With a 335i + all those mods. You lose engine, suspension and brake waranty. For those who love modding and want to spend a lot of time and money doing it, maybe a 335 is a better option. For those who want a car thats great stock, the m3 is a better option. Another huge bonus is an m3 is an ///M. You can mod a 3 series, 5 series or 6 series as much as you want, but the M series is always going to perform better. I am not bias either. I do not own an M car. I own a BMW 330ci. I am just saying it how it is. My next car is definitely going to be an m3. After owning my 330ci for 4 years and spending money on all my mods, I realize no matter what I do I would still rather have a bone stock m3.

+1. I was in the same boat....2002 330ci with the intent to get the M3 Coupe. The ride was hit on the autobahn and had to get a car...thus the 335i Coupe. If I could do it all over again...I'd buy a POS car to hold me over until I got the M3.

My current E46 is just 2 years old and is still turning heads. M has a lure which will always out-pace any 3's unless you like to be understated. I am not crazy about the E92 M3 yet, but I agree with some other's comments that when you see one on the road, the old one will instantly look dated however classic it may seem. Listen to your heart, go put your deposit if you want to be one of the first.

I didn't think the 335i looked too hot online or in pictures, then I have recently seen several in person and they are beautiful IMO. I stare at them as much as the e46 M3 which I love. If the 335i looks this good in person, the new M3 will be ridiculous.

I can afford it. But do I want to? It's either the E92 M3, or TURBO E46 M3 with over 600wHP, or a 911 Turbo 996. Hmm...

I think you're right here. I put in a pre-order (and $1K) for the 2008 M3 late last year and my sales person (a German guy with over 20 years experience - hands on) told me I would probably take delivery in 2009. This was also stated on my receipt. We also went over the "expected" costs (using various previous and new BMW models as benchmarks) and it ran up to near $100K after taxes, and a few extras. The timing and cost are probably easier to guesstimate than some of the specs and design of the production model. For this reason I decided on a slightly used M3 and am loving it as I wait for the dust to settle on the 2008. It will be a long and exciting wait but well worth it. And this gives more time to save some $ as well. K. |

whaaaaa?! no way, that is not possible! 100k??
There is no way in hell the M3 is gonna come anywhere close to 100k. M5's don't even cost that much... I was looking the other day at some estimates of what we can expect for MSRP on the new M3. I used % markups for the M5 and M6 for comparison. M5 has a 40% markup over the 550 M6 has a 33% markup over the 650 The 335 is $40k and a 33-40% markup from that price puts the starting MSRP of the new M3 between $54-57. Worst case scenario we're talkin low $60's MSRP... |
