Yes this makes sense but hopefully I can buy one out of a dealership still under warrenty. Whichever car I get will not be new but out of the 3 the m3 will obviously be the closest to new. I guess I will have to settle this with a test drive.

Just buy one that has enough warranty on it so that if anything does go wrong it'll be covered. This is one of the reasons I don't modify my cars. It kills resale.

I currently own two of the cars in question and owned an M6 for 2 years back in 2007-2009. My short take:
If you only can get one car, its the M3- luxurious, performing, fast and a daily driver. Its the slowest but not by much vs the M6. Its that all around performer and I clearly like it more than the M6 it replaced. The M6 is faster but its an 8/10ths car or more IMHO- I was always having to be in the 6k rpm range to push the car around. I weighs about 300-400 lbs more than the M3 and it felt much more piggish than the M3. The chassis feedback was not as positive and the handling characteristics left something to be desired. This is my opinion on the 6. I liked the looks when lowered with 20 inch wheels and the V10 sound is to die for especially with a modded exhaust. But it was the car I used the most and it didnt fit my needs or desires like the 3. The DCT clearly is the better tranny over the SMG IMO. Part of the reason I got the M3 was the DCT and how much I like it in the GTR. The GTR is the best performer of the lot but its just not a daily driver for me. Its a big shell with blindspots and its too "look at me" for most. As for maintenance, its been relatively cheap for me. The 1k oil change is free, the next one was 150 bucks. No other maintenance is due yet but the 12k tranny fluid change will not be cheap- circa 600 dollars for me. The new software allows for unlimited launches under warranty so I dont worry about that. I honestly have never used LC as the car in "mash and go" format is incredible. For me its just too inconvenient for everyday driving, parking, and gas is ok. The GTR IMHO is a car that needs modding too. It reacts so well to the mods and its really not too expensive. The GTR is the best bang for the buck performance wise as a 2nd or 3rd or 4th car but not as a DD. There are many that do use it as a DD and swear by it. If I did use it as a DD I would 100% not mod it as the warranty issues, although not prevalent with me, would cause to me want more piece of mind.

vic55 you have one hell of a collection going, is the m3 your daily? Beautiful settups on all three cars I love the lip on the m3. Do you know when the rotors and breaks must be changed is it 30k miles? The tranny fluid and oil changes dont scare me to much. All of this talk makes me shift to the m3 but I deffinitly need to drive both cars.

Vic's cars all look great except for those wheels on the GTR. Not the most flattering angle either.
As for which car to get, that's a personal decision. Don't get caught up in what other people say. Listen to it all but in the end not everyone will be happiest in one car. Gotta be true to yourself.

The trans issues on the GT-R are overblown.....yeah, Nissan should have never programmed the initial launch control in the vehicle....show me any transmission that can handle repeated dropping of the clutch at revs, with the turbo's spooled, on an AWD car with very sticky tires.....something bad is eventually going to happen. Nissan stepped up (albeit prompted by a lawsuit) and fixed the problem. Yeah, the brakes are pricey, in 2009 they wanted all rotors and pads changed at the same time, now, they have lessened up on that, only requiring that the rotors be checked....also, the aftermarket has really taken care of that, about 1/2 price now for good rotors/pads. Trans service...well, about $100/litre of fluid + labour, you can get aftermarket fluid for about $25/litre, but it may affect the warranty....but its not something that needs to be done all the time. I just sold my 2008 M3, full header back Dinan Exhaust, stage 2 dinan flash, stage 1 dinan suspension...I loved that car, I really did. Just so smooth, and the intoxicating noise at 8K rpm, but one drive in the GTR and I was hooked. Very docile when you want it to be, and a freaking monster when you get on it. I looked around a bought a low mileage 2009 GTR....I couldnt be happier with my decision....
They are both great cars, and I will miss the M3, but I'm sure the GTR will fill that void pretty quick. The GTR's are consistently dynoing at around 430 whp stock, puts them right around 500HP at the crank on a factory tune....put a mild Cobb off the shelf tune and a catback with a y pipe, will put you close to 500 whp with no problem. People are running this setup with no problem at all. The car does beg to be modded.......Nissan did a great job with this car, but it gets alot of hate, because its a nissan.....not everyones taste, but a great machine |

So you can use launch control on 09's now or is that just 2010? Also what is gas mileage on a GTR in DD conditions compared to your M3? Daily driving conditions I mean maybe some spirited driving and also just cruising out of boost. Are they real strict with the cobb tune and catback or can you flash back to stock without the stealership knowing? I saw a guy ran 129mph traps with a custom tmap tune and midpipes. Must be 520rwhp or so to get that number. |

I talked with the local dealer regarding exhaust mods and tunes. He said that cat backs would not be an issue, deleting the cats would null the emissions warranty, but high flow cats would not....he did not recommend changing the downpipes.. As far as tunes, any change to the factory tune is logged and can/will be pulled by nissan in the event of a catastrophic failure. The SA said that about 50% of the GT-R's that roll thru the dealership for service have a tune, and to date there have been no warranty problems or denied service. Doesnt really say anything, but it gives you some indication that Nissan is taking it on a case by case basis, and not a blanket 'denial' like some other manufacturers have. |

to the OP -- since you're 22 and live in NY
I would check to see the insurance rates on all the cars you are looking at to help you choose. GTR is fast -- very fast. Power corrupts -- and you may either hurt yourself or others if run out of talent one day while showing off. Imagine what your license will cost then. |
