If you don't know what the ticking sound sounds like, just look for snows video.

BTW, this appears to be only an issue on 6 speeds. If you have this ticking sound and have M-DCT, let me know.
I have DCT and have the same problem I think ...

I took my car for 1200 service and they were super busy to update my DCT, and I was told to bring my car back in 2-3 days. I brought it back in 3 days and on the way to the dealer I heard the same noise ... I was able to hear it only driving in 1-2 gear and the low speed with the engine rpm's not higher than 2,000-2,500. I told my SA right away about this noise and he told their service department manager to go on the test drive with me ... He was able to hear it and had no clue what it is ...

I left my car at the dealership for 4 days and they were not able to give me an answer what is going on. This noise was also heard by BMW NA engineer who was there that day. They basically told me that he documented some information and it will take them a 5-10 days to figure out what is going on ... They told me that it is totally safe to drive, but they want me to bring it back next monday ...

After seeing this thread I got a bit relieved that it is not only my car has this issue ...

knifegun - I live in Bay Area and don't mind to meet up with you to compare the sound of the engines. Pm me if you would like to do that ... I have HD camera and we can record the engines sounds side by side.

ase2dais. You bet, apologizes. My dealership's current read is that the ticking sound is normal- how certain they are is to be determined. I am looking forward to talking to the shop foreman sometime in the next 24 hours. Their findings- which was relayed by a tech was that the sound was coming from the header section of the exhaust after sustained operations (expansion). Not sure if this is the final diagnosis nor am I certain BMW NA had any input based on data they have been collecting from the field. Reading through this thread, sounds like this ticking is common. It may only be a matter of time with respect to everyone hearing the tick. Whether or not it is an issue is beyond me- possibly beyond many to include dealerships. Will keep you posted. I am very interested if there is a recommended fix to sound if in fact we are talking about headers- possibly material related. Ticking sound just seems to be a little frequent/consistent (once ticking starts) to be temperature related. Ticking sound/frequency never changes. It is independent of whether I am driving with/without throttle or whether I am at idle. Only thing the ticking sound is dependent on is 1) the car has to be driven for a while (sustained operation) 2) the window has to be down.

I know I would want a new car too. But its also one of those things that could cost you a lot of time and money. Tough call. Remember, people here have already had their M-DCT transmissions replaced because the service dept screwed up. Could they also have gotten new cars? Maybe so, but not without a lot of headache.

At the very least, I would insist upon some compensation for the car being in the shop for a month or whatever amount of time. Maybe some addtional compensation beyond that, and also, since BMW USA is involved, maybe an M loaner of some kind from their fleet.

I'd have to agree...fighting for a new car is probably going to be very time consuming, stressful and potentially expensive if you get a lawyer involved. I certainly approach BMWNA about them making it right by giving you a new car!! Also, be aware you need to deal with BMWNA directly on this - the dealership is not going to be able to make that kind of decision anyway - without BMWNA's permission - as they will be the one's footing the bill. Unless you can somehow prove the engine is fried due to the dealers recent service activity? The fact that BMW jumped in so quick makes me think there may be a few other engine failure cases lurking out there and they are trying to pinpoint why they are failing....I'd make sure you have BMWNA's attention and commitment to ship a new engine ASAP, and some sort of concession for your trouble - extended warrantly, etc. I wish you luck as this is a pain with a new (and very expensive) car and can ruin your entire ownership experience - if you let it. Stay involved and deal directly with BMWNA as much as you can...good news is that you already have their attention!! I just dropped mine off for the 1200 mile service and to have them fix a "clanking" noise that I get on cold start up. Sounds like the engine accessory belt is slapping something right when the engine starts up...not very encouraging to hear - but once it starts it sounds fine and will not make the noise again until it has sat overnight...makes me think (hope) it's not internal engine failure - but something with an accessory or the belt/pully system.

For all those people who have the erratic engine ticking sound between 1K and 3K after the engine temperature is above 210 degrees F, take it in to your dealer and have it at least documented that you have this issue. I had the issue and drove the car for 3000 miles. Did not seem to affect anything. But I still have not heard resolution on this issue. Sounds like some dealers are less willing to look into the issue than others. But if this is a real issue, we should get to the bottom of it. And that can only be done by having the BMW of NA FSE hear the sound.

I know a lot of reasons that are giving is due to the exhuast expanding and contracting. However, I don't think the exhaust/headers would make a ticking sounds revving the engine up. I may when you are lowering the RPMs thereofre lowering the operating temperatures.

My foreman and FSE definitely did not believe it was normal and were trying to diagnose it.

My car is still in the shop. Thought I was going to be able to speak with the shop foreman but unable to so far. Left a message. Pretty quiet- not sure if this sound is being dismissed as normal (which I think it is). As a matter of fact, the dealership correspondence with me has been pretty weak.

My shop foreman was actually the one who insisted that I leave the car at the dealership because my ticking sound did not sound normal to him. He was adamant that the sound was not normal- almost to the point that he looked at me funny when I said I thought the sound was normal.

I'm not sure where this leaves us if now my dealership is saying the ticking sound is is normal. Question: were you able to elevate this issue any higher than your dealership? If so- how did you do it. I know dealerships look at things in a different light than say... BMW NA. My spider senses at this point are tingling. Am I dealing with a bunch of untrained bubbas at my dealership or is there an actual problem. Not sure why this can't be clarified with a single phone call to BMW- possibly the M3 help desk or M3 hotline if those even exist. At this point there should be enough field data to sustantiate any feedback to customers.

I would like to know what the overall BMW response would be- in other words, if the tick is really normal... I want my car released and signed back to me. I like my loaner car and all with its good gas mileage but it ain't an M3. WTF.

+1 I'm having the same issue with my DCT, I hear a strange noise from 1st to 2nd on lowest driving setting, I also 3rd to 4th. more like a clunk sound. I had my software updated and guess what just yesterday received a recall letter from BMW-NA on several 08 and 09 models that at low RPM can possibly stall OMG !!! Well when under heavy breaking 40mph to 20mph and quickly pushing the the accelerator car jumps and whiplash, long story short scheduled service for tommorrow. Lilcow tip if the car is in shop more than 15 days it can be lemoned.

To answer a few questions and to report my status:
1.) there are some videos from me and snowsm3 (see page 5 on this thread where I had links to some). Again, it is not the sound of the MT at idle, it is not the driveline clunk, and it is not the left front wheel ticking on faster right-hand turns.

2.) My sound gradually diminished starting about 4.5k miles. I can't get it to tick anymore. The car appears to be driving fine. No strange idle behavior, and starts up fine.

3.) I thought my engine had started to vibrate much more btwn 1200 and 1700 RPM (say sitting in neutral and reving to that RPM). I went to the dealer and a car on the lot had the same characteristics. So I guess it was (is) normal and had nothing to do with the ticking.

Yup. I think that's it. I'd love to hear what folks find, though.

Thanks for the update. I've got the tick you're referencing and it is very apparent on my car. Am at 3100 mi. I'll keep you posted with what I hear.

Well, I hope it is nothing to be concerned with. Sounds like maybe it is something unlrelated to reliability. Hopefullly, that can be confirmed somehow!

Yes,the knocking/clicking type sound from 2k-3k rpm that started when the car reached 800 miles is gone.I don't know if it has to do with the cold weather here (temps have been in the mid 30's) or it's gone period because the car has more miles.
