There is no service at 3000 miles that I am aware of!

I think I'm going to change the oil 1000 miles after the initial break in oil comes out at 1200, and then every 3000 miles after that. I know I'll be paying for several oil changes between the BMW scheduled maintenance, but I think the best way to keep the F1 engine happy is fresh, clean oil.
Does anyone know what an oil change costs on the M3? |

And no I don't think it's excessive to do the oil change every 3000 miles. Most synthetic oil changes should be done between 5000-6000 miles anyways. The reason why BMW tells you to change the oil at much higher milage is because you're not paying for it, they are! So to keep the costs down for BMW, they extend the period of time and milage between changes. I'd say if you own the car like I do, change the oil and keep that engine clean. If you're leasing, keep the costs of the lease as low as possible and follow the recommended maintenance schedule. Cheers!

You'll know when the oil is topped up by knowing how many liters of oil go into the engine (8.8 liters) and then putting the right amount in after you drain the old oil. Trusting that sensor is a dangerous decision. I think that changing every 3,000 is excessive. An old habit from older generation cars that has continued despite the fact that new engine and oil technologies make it unnecessary. That being said, I'll change mine every 5000-7500, because I do agree that BMW seems to really spread those services apart. That's just my look on it, I'm sure plenty around here will change theirs like clockwork every 3,000. |

yep put the amount that is called for in, and then confirm it with the digital meter.
how do you think BMW service tech do it? I mean they are people jsut like us, they dont use a machine to do it.

so if you dont follow BMW's maintenance schedule, you have to pay for the oil changes out of pocket??

crawl under car find oil pan
unscrew oil pan bolt and drain oil into oil pan put screw back in snug open oil fill under hood, poor in 8.8 liters (or whateve is the amount) close cap. start car and verify on meter.

Actually, some modern conventional oils are good up to 7500 miles. Synthetics are good up to twice that mileage. I do understand the concern about a high revving V8 engine and the neccesity of having the best oil supply possible. But a regular 3000 miles oil change is wasting money and time with today's technologies as well as regular oil changes at 15,000 miles at the dealer is pushing it too damn much. I would say, 8000 miles oil changes under normal use are more like it, as it used to be before BMW started paying for the maintenance. IMO, 8000 miles is the best balance between keeping this engine highly protected and effective synthetic oil changes. |
