Winter or A/S?
So, I'm thinking about picking up a set of wheels/tires for the winter, and wanted to see if an investment in a set of winter tires are really needed for our area. (DC Metro) When I had my S2000, I never drove in snow, just left the summers on, my G, I switched it out to A/S and they worked fine for light-med snow duty. I'm leaning towards getting the A/S for my M3. That should be fine for our winters, right? I mean, I'm not going to be driving if we get a foot of snow.

It really depends on the use of your M3, for those lucky ones who have them for wkend garage queens, I take they wont be pulled out during snow storm.
... but it seems you'll have the car for yearlong driving I say A/S tires since winter here are pretty mild (my DD e90 325 has A/S for yearlong and Pilot Alpin for Winters. Alpins are not rated as a full blown Winters like other Wiinter tires having rough rides)

Well, I'm going to keep the OEM 19" for the summer months. I was planning on either getting the winter set from Tire Rack ($1400~) or buying a new set of wheels and all season for the winter. And yes, it's my daily driver, but again, I won't be driving it in a lot of snow or ice. I'll just stay home and keep the car in the garage.

I agree, tires like Blizzaks fron what I read are heavy duty snow tires which gives rough ride which you dont need anyway
which tires are you deciding?

as for those shopping for Winter Tires
Heres TireRAck Winter tire Comparison Charts http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey...port%20Package ex. a comparison between Blizak and Pilot Alpins Blizzak overall rating is a notch above Alpins, its pretty good on heavy snow traction compared to Alpins but loses on Hydroplanning against Alpins Its really a matter of choice, if you expect to use it in a heavier snow condition it will win against Alpins. However, since DC Metro is not like North Dakotas Winter snow, you may want a better ride quality, noise comfort and better thread wear, Alpins has a slight edge over Blizzaks rougher reported ride, due to its better heavy snow traction (see charts) Its all a matter of tradeoffs. Whats good for the gander maybe not good for the goose.

I think I'll just go ahead with the A/S. I won't be trekking in deep snow in my M.

Good choice!
but let me continue my deep analysis since Im on the roll here lolz but overall using the same charts http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey...port%20Package SP Winter Sport beats Blizzak and Alpin however SP Winter Sport 3D loses on Heavy Snow Traction over Blizzak, but SP Winter Sport M3 does not and SP Winter Sport 3D wins over ride and noise comfort against the 2, but the SP Winter Sport M3 loses to Alpins in ride and noise comfort amazing analysis thats why if I ever get a trade in deal on my e90 for a smaller commuter car, its Winter Pilot Alpin new owner will be happy with his new winter set but of crse A/S tires are another debate with it own merits

Guys just remember that winter tires are not just for snow and ice. Its the road temperatures that make a big difference too. From what I've found talking to guys...the summer 19" and 18" tires are crap in the winter not just in snow and ice but in the cold due to the their composition and type of rubber used which gets less grippy also as the temps come down. A/S are an okay bridge and compromise but remember that they are that a compromise. I recall putting a set of Bridgestone A/S on my wife's car and definately noticing more play at the edges of limits during cornering and aggressive driving. So eventhough our winters are mild most of the time here and most folks have a garage (like me) and/or other drivers for when it really gets bad out there....I'd probably vote to put a set of winter tires on my car just to make sure I have the optimal coverage! good discussion tho!
