I'm now debating whether to order an SSK or leave the stock shifter as is for awhile. I drove a Cayman S last weekend and loved how short and crisp the throws were.

You know I've been skeptical about the need for SSK on this car as I like the stock shifter, but I must admit I've been growing more and more curious about the UUC kit. I wish I could drive a modified car to see how it feels. I don't want to have anything installed without trying it out first. And, I am also concerned about the transmission warranty.

guys... i fucked up. i was double clutching once but my hand wasnt quick enough so i grinded a bit. didnt force the gear in place (going into 3rd from 5th). i let go of shifter into neutral very quickly, but ever since i did that i feel shifting into 3rd isnt "clean" anymore. like i feel im hitting something.

Not sure what you were doing exactly. Are you saying you got on the throttle too early with the clutch engaged--when the dog gears were semi-engaged--while shifting into neutral during double clutching? Can you explain what you did exactly step by step including throttle and clutch inputs? I guess you can damage the dog gears if you get on the throttle with the clutch engaged while the dog gears are disengaging (before the necessary 3->N shifter movement is complete), or just engage the clutch while the dog gears are disengaging.

depress clutch
put shifter in neutral
release clutch
blip gas
depress clutch
release clutch
try to put shifter into 3rd

it made a small noise so i let go of shifter for a second, then rev-matched and put in gear again
all within a second or less. usually im pretty good about hand/foot coordination when i double clutch, but that one time my brain farted.

so something went wrong when you tried to shift into 3rd from N? was the clutch fully engaged at that point? were you on the throttle? is that what you mean by you screwed up?

no if u see the sequence i released the clutch first THEN i tried to put in 3rd gear. i was not on throttle i was done with my blip. so clutch was not depressed when i tried to put in gear. my hand was slower than my foot

releasing the clutch pedal means engaging the clutch. so your clutch was fully engaged when you tried to shift into 3rd. you might have damaged the synchronizer on 3rd.

possibly... do u have ideas on how i can test to verify that?

i need to know before i put on ssk, coz if i do and im grinding more or what not, the dealer will blame the ssk and i'll have to fight it or pay for it.

but if i damaged the synchro why do i feel it when shifting now? i wasnt aware i'd be feeling that in my hand.

When you move the gear selector, you a slide collar on the output shaft which meshes with the dog teeth attached to the large gear which defines the real gear ratio. The synchronizer acts like a small clutch for the dog gears on the large gear and the collar to engage at matching speeds. If it is damaged, it will no longer perform its function, and the dog teeth can grind a bit and you would feel resistance if the revs are not perfectly matched. That might be what's happening. At any rate, I would not install the SSK and consider taking it in to the dealership and report the problem to see what they might or might not be willing to do about it. Otherwise, they could blame it on SSK if they give it a thorough test drive and discover the problem when your lease is over. I've never leased a car before, so I don't know how that works. On the other hand, taking it to the dealer might get the problem officially on the books, and they might simply blame it on operator error, which might also bite you when you return it, but again I don't know if that's how leases work. I guess another option is to do nothing about it, install SSK now, uninstall SSK before returning the car, and if they complain about it then, you can claim it is normal wear and tear for a 2 or 3 year old sports car. That depends on if you want the problem fixed or not. The synchronizers are meant to experience wear over time. Any maybe there is something else wrong with it.

That is exactly what it sounds like to me, especially based on the symptoms that Mantis describes having now.
