Banging noise in steering column

I believe this has been discussed before and wonder if there is an update and/or more recent solution:

When going over bumps there is a banging noise in my steering column. It comes and goes.

At first I thought it had something to do with the left and then right suspension: However, the banging noise sometimes happens when the auto stop/start engages: So the starting of the motor, shakes my car a bit, and I hear the banging noise in the steering column.

I think I previously read that the air bag may be lose and this is causing the noise? Can anyone confirm?

The dealer heard the noise and greased the steering wheel. This did not correct my problem.

Any suggestions or BMW service update is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
