That’s a valid point. I’m currently running carbon‑fiber mud flaps on the front to keep rocks and debris from getting kicked back onto my M3’s wide rear hips. To reinforce that protection, I also had larger PPF sections installed on the hips, so the paint stays clean and chip‑free even with the aggressive offset of these BBS LM's.

For those uninitiated with either, and not convinced if PPF or Ceramic Coating is worth it or not. They both have a unique function:
Paint Protection Film or PPF is a 6–8 mil thick polyurethane film that sits on top of the paint and absorbs physical damage.
PPF = impact protection. It takes the hit so your paint doesn’t.

• Stops - rock chips, gravel, sand, salt, and scratches before they ever reach the paint.
• Self‑healing - minor swirls disappear with heat (sunlight or a heat gun).
• High‑impact protection - ideal for front bumper, hood, fenders, mirrors, rocker panels, and wide hips (like on your M3).
• Longevity - lasts 5–10 years depending on brand and environment. But, I wouldn't advise keeping it on that long 4-5 years max.
• Cost - typically $1,500–$7,000 for full coverage, depending on the size of the vehicle and prep.

Ceramic coating is a 2–5 micron liquid layer that chemically bonds to the clear coat.
Ceramic = chemical protection + ease of maintenance. It does not stop rock chips.

• It offers chemical resistance and protects against UV, oxidation, bug guts, bird droppings, road grime, and stains.
• Hydrophobic - water beads and sheets off, making washing easier.
• Gloss enhancement - deeper shine and slick feel.
• Longevity - professional coatings last 2–4 years, which requires 1-2 year annual application of the hydrophobic layer.
• Cost - typically $500–$2,500 depending on product and prep.

I’m in the Philly area and have been calling around to about 6 reputable shops for full font PPF, adding the rear bumper, full ceramic coat and full ceramic window tint.

Your quote is on the higher end of the ranges. $4,200 - $5,600 is what I’m being told in both PA and NJ.

Never had any of this but I’m getting my X5 delivered this weekend so wanted to get it protected asap. Waffling on trying to do the ceramic myself and just pay for PPF and tint.

I hear that. I did go for a partial PPF and full ceramic treatment on my car. It all came out great but its the PPF part thats the most impressive meaning I clearly couldnt have done that myself.

Now, they used a high quality Ceramic product(Car Pro CQuartz professional) and its working great. But, my car gets sort of babied and I sometimes do feel like I could have just done a consumer-grade job myself and been fine. Its done now though and I am pleased with the work they did.

You'll just have to make that final decision & accept that choice, right?

For the scope of work you’re asking about, $3,500 is a reasonable figure. Quality paintwork, proper prep, and a clean installation aren’t cheap, and the shops that do it right typically charge accordingly.

Competition can help keep pricing in check, but if you’re unable to find a reputable installer in your area, it’s better to expand your search than settle for someone whose work may compromise the final result. The right shop makes all the difference.
