When every new BMW model is an 'M' are any 'M's?

If BMW says its an M and there is a M badge its an M branded car. Whatever especially Americans call a "real" M is a car with more M equipment than cars, with a different engine tune/parts and suspension.
Imagine if BMW was like VW group where you can get like 4 different brands of car based on the same platform. I think its more about understanding the car industry than crying about a spesific car being available with M trim/badging just because it has the wrong engine settup/suspension.. The question you really should ask is if there is anything OTHER than the badge that is changed on the car whenever you get the badge. If the answer is yes, then its an M car. A real one. 😂 Even if the Engine is not the fastest, or the suspension is not the stiffest. There is a different look to the car that is branded. |

I don’t understand the fake M hate. Is it really a problem if office bro brags he bought a sweet “fake” M car when you know better?

I guess I bought my G87 to drive, not earn an extra $5k at trade in time.

The point is there needs to be exclusivity between these models...

I understand but I don’t think $100k earns great exclusivity. I think a GT4RS is the start. 911T no, GT3 yes. M4 no, M4CS yes. IMHO

Fake M…real M…wah wah wah
![]() Reality is if all people cared about was higher performance vs lower performance who the hell would care what it says on the back…the badge itself doesn’t create or take away HP. We would just look at what the car was made up of and buy accordingly. The only people who get caught up about M badges are ones trying to prove their “badge” makes them special. You don’t want others to have an M badge because you feel less special if you had an M car. You realize this is the same concept as a person who puts an M badge on a non M car to similarly feel more special. Both directions are equally cringe. Maybe BMW should really put an M on everything and then we can put this topic to rest and all focus on what should really matter…what performance level makes you happy for your daily drive, or your track car, or your garage queen/king. I am happy when I see someone posting they are enjoying the drive and exploring the world in a great performing car…that’s the real point of these cars. |

Not that exclusive when every Gen Z tiktoker has a G8x and influence other Gen Z to take out a 30 year loan to get these cars lol.

But when you drive and own a full M and compare it to an M lite or M Sport pkg model, you know it’s more than the sum of the parts. It’s not just a regular series car with a tune and that’s the point. If you buy the full M you get what you want. If you buy the one of the others because it’s what you want, who cares? Everyone is happy.

Compared to what other car company? They all added SUVs. I give BMW credit for not falling into the EU's you must make only EV's trap. oil is not running out and EV's are not that green. Solar panels and windfarms are far from "green."
American car companies as far as competition brands? I would only consider a Ford. Chevy with Camaro and Corvette are still kind of cool and that was Bob Lutz. The Bob Lutz who helped create M. Korean cars? No thanks. Bad engines. Toyota? They are having a terrible time with those new V6 turbos in their trucks. Junk. Supra is a BMW. Honda - the NSX is kind of cool. Mazda - good vehicles and an innovative company but nothing sporty. The other Japanese stuff? No thanks. Subaru good and reliable but not sporty. Porsche - major disaster due to EVs. The 911T with a manual is nice but 911s are bloated now. The $200K GT3s are probably good. Mercedes - no thanks. Big bloated and a lot less reliable than newest BMWs. Audi - major problems, sales dropping, models are old and not updated. VW - another EV disaster. Italian - Ferrari brand has been diluted. Lambo is mainly an Audi. Poor Alfa and Fiat are on life support. Sadly, Lancia is mainly gone. John Elkann is terrible driving Stellantis into the ground. BMW is not perfect but as far as sport and luxury brand they are doing better than the rest. Last year sales globally were flat. They have avoided being destroyed by what happened in China. China was gravy for everyone including GM but it was a trap. Globally everyone will be facing cheap Chinese EVs. BMW has a good and reliable line up of EVs and plug ins. Porsche's EVs supposedly have major problems. BMW still has some very sporty cars like M2, M3 and M4. Endless videos on YT with people modifying them and praising. The i8 for me was one of the most cool cars except that crappy 3 cylinder turbo and cooling system issues on the car. If they did an i8 with a 6 speed manual and B58 putting out at least 420 bhp., I would buy it. |

Great car. The only model in the current lineup that could tempt me out of my G30.

I have been with the brand for 28 years exclusively. Always wanted an M3. Finally ordering one.
From the first time I saw an “M340” (or whatever the first model was this forum refers to as “M-light”), I was like “WTF”? I personally believe the entire brand’s diluted itself irrespective of this topic. Think about it - the original M3 was a coupe. Sure, they eventually added a sedan (which I preferred) - but today, the “OG” M3 badge is no longer available on a coupe(!) since the brand had to spread the entire model range across an inordinate amount of “series” and sub models. It’s become worse than Ford. Eventually, Ford had to consolidate. I hope BMW does too. |
