If you got rear-ended - by the other driver's insurance w/o any cost to you. If you backed into something - by your insurance, and you will be out of comprehensive deductible. Basically, the ONLY opinion that matters is that of the insurance adjusters. The rest is just idle speculation! HTH, a

Cost depends on where you live & whether new or used original parts are to be utilized.

If you got hit make sure you get covered for any diminished value losses. I made that mistake once and found out the hard way

I’d personally remove the rear bumper and see if any structural panels are damaged. If yes, write it off and move on. If no, get on eBay etc looking for similar cars being broken for parts. If that level of investigation is beyond your capability then it’s probably never going to be a financially viable repair. |

I can only speak from a US-perspective, but I'd be shocked if it wasn't at least $10k. Repair prices have gotten absolutely out of hand here.
Also, is being able to buy back a totaled car a typical think in the UK? Here you usually don't have that option if the insurance company totals it, unless I'm mistaken. The policy that I have with Hagerty for my Z4M specifically has that option, which I was kind of surprised by when I first started using them. I got the impression that it was a "classic car" specific thing. |

I'm going through a similar issue now. Not my E82 but my 2019 Toyota C-HR. Got rear ended pretty good by an X5....go figure. Banged up the rear tailgate, rear bumper, rear bumper cover, left quarter panel, and my tow hitch. Have an initial estimate of $3500 for the repairs. We'll see what the final total will end up being.

I've had a car totaled before when I hit a deer. Fought with my insurance company to get more money out of them for about a month. I got a concession on the nicer aftermarket head unit/stereo I installed in the car to increase the payout. I didn't have the stock head unit so couldn't install that one to pull the aftermarket one out. Other things you can use to increase the payout are any recent major work done on the car, recently installed new tires, etc. I thought about buying back the car to fix it because it still ran fine and didn't seem to have anything majorly wrong with it. But I didn't want to risk other unseen damage when all the body panels were pulled off. The other complication is that after having the work done, I would need to have the car inspected by the state to certify its road worthiness. The title of the car would be branded as a salvage/rebuilt but I wouldn't care because I was going to drive the car into the ground. And finally, insurance. Coverage would be limited to liability only and no option to purchase collision/comprehensive. |
