Mporium Vanos Cup - First thoughts
Hello Everyone,
Today I've got the Mporium vanos cup, set of four [no installation kit]. At first, when I placed the order, it showed the parts were in stock, but it took me 11 days to get them. I just missed my installation window, but OK. Parts came well packaged, in a box with proper packaging material. All good. Parts are heavy, which don't bother me, but I know some of you are worried about the weight. Parts are steel but could have been made of aluminum with the same effect. Again, I am not worried about the weight. There are some differences in dimensions. Not worried about it, but that tells me they are not run on CNC, but for parts like these, CNC isn't really required. Most important thing: no instructions whatsoever. If are not into ISTA/TIS, don't even think about getting this as you are most definitely going to screw the install up. If you have access to information and tools, these are for you, but NO INSTRUCTIONS are provided. I may be able to do the install sometime next weekend or the one after, as it took them too long to ship. I do believe this is the correct way of fixing the vanos cover, using Mporium cups. Thank you all. |

I received instructions when I ordered mine. Printout straight from TIS. They probably forgot to include them. Reach out and I'm sure they'd get you sorted.

Thanks for posting your feedback!
The instructions are included with the installation kit. If you don't purchase the installation kit, it's understood that you're already aware of the process since you'll be collecting the additional required components for the job. They're manufactured on a CNC lathe from bar stock Chromoly. As with all machined parts there are specifications for acceptable tolerances. These components do not require additional precision (i.e. cost) for their purpose, so some inconsequential variances can be measured. Weight is a non-issue. For context, each cam/adjuster weighs 8 pounds. These cannot be made of aluminum as these replace the central bolt washer and are subjected to significant clamping and torsional forces. During development and trails with an aluminum part, we observed indications of movement between the adjuster bolt and cup. Aluminum will fail over time so we made them from steel. I'm sorry they took longer to arrive than you hoped. Between holiday closures and overbooked schedules, we are running slow this time of year. We can expedite when needed if we're made aware. Thanks for your purchase, and if you still need the TIS instructions just let me know so I can email the PDF. |

I bought a set too. Looks good. I got the installation kit and it came with some printed instructions. But I'll be getting a local BMW specialist to do this job anyway so that makes no difference to me
![]() Maybe worth mentioning - even though their website doesn't seem to allow international shipping, I contacted them and they arranged the shipping to Australia for me. Will be interesting to see how you go with the install. I'm waiting for my NRW Valve covers to arrive and I'll have this done as part of my next service, so it may be a while before I get this done. |

Installation was pretty straight forward.
Locked cams on bank 1 as well as the crank pulley on the TDC position. To lock the cams I used a 27mm wrench [I think this was the size]. It takes some effort to move the cams into the locking position as there is little slack on the timing chain. Once there, just removed the bolt from VANOS intake, removed the plastic cover, which was like new btw, and installed the Mporium part. I could not use my degree tool, so after torquing the first steps, I marked the cover at 200 degrees and torqued the final step. I did not follow the installation procedure entirely; I did not release the VANOS bolts and redid the whole process, but this is just me. As a side note, the cylinder head covers were in really bad condition. I also replaced the spark plug tubes with some aluminum ones. I am pretty happy with the results. ![]() ![]() |

The under side valve cover paint is in terrible condition! What was the mileage? Now I'm worried about mine at 150K miles. Perhaps 2025 will be the year of NRW valve covers for mine...

Anyway that's good to hear. Another peace of mind upgrade on the glorious S65. Excited (and nervous) to do mine come spring/summer. Interesting you didn't use a timing tool. I gotta watch videos and read up on this more to understand all of it, and how a 27mm wrench worked. Last edited by a5m; 01-03-2025 at 10:15 AM.. |

51xxx miles. Oil changes at 3k mile intervals, either OEM or Motul. But I think it is a time related thing, with these covers. Car is going to be 13 years old next April! |

Ah I misunderstood then when you said you locked the cams and used a 27mm wrench. I assumed it was used in place of a timing tool, but now I gather both were used/needed. My bad. Again, my ignorance from not being familiar with the procedure.

You are not familiar with the procedure yet; but you will be soon! Take the task; it is a lot easier than it looks. Good luck!
