just rent one from deansbimmer
I wouldn't trust those aliexpress/alibaba ones mainly because the timing check is a specific process with the actual BMW timing tool. so if the aliexpress ones are machined wrong.. that can be a bad thing in the end.

Been speaking with them and they recommended CTA Tools. Those are around the $200 range.
omgzirra_exe You're right that I don't want to risk anything with the cheapest set I can find, but if it worked for one person then... The tool essentially just locks the cams in place right? Haven't looked thoroughly into what's involved but that was my basic understanding. |

So CTA sucks apparently. Two recent reviews on Amazon saying they aren't machined properly and too small to fit on the cams. Similar review on FCP Euro.
Anyone use this Neilsen set? https://www.neilsentools.com/product...44813477478709 |

Nothing yet. Putting this off until summer so I'll do some more digging, but the Neilsen look promising and probably the ones I'll end up going with.

As noted, we killed the loaner program because even with 30 day limits on the tools we couldn't get them back swiftly enough to keep them in stock for others.
I'm surprised to hear that the cheap ones had any machining issues...I suspect that was a random issue as we've tried a bunch of the cheap sets and they were all ok. They're all Chinese made tools anyway, including the Neilsen set which looks like a dandy price and worth trying.. |
