Oil amount needed for oil change with a Do88 oil cooler?
For those of you who have a Do88 oil cooler, did you need to use extra oil during your oil changes? If so, how much more did you need?
Its not completely clear to me if when draining the oil out of the s65 for an oil change if the oil is drained out of the oil cooler or not. If it is, it seems to reason that with the larger capacity of the Do88 oil cooler, more oil would be required at each oil change. My experience with Mazda rotary engines which have universally used an air/cooler since their introduction in the 60s (except the 83-85 12A) was that the coolers did not empty during an oil change. If I was filling the car after a rebuild, and the oil cooler and lines were totally empty, it would take an extra 2 quarts to get the oil level right vs a regular oil change. Would be great to know what the story is for the s65, especially since it doesn't have a dipstick. |

Installed do88 'Big Pack' for 6MT this summer.
Typically use LM oil kit [illustrated]. My experience, no noticeable, 'additional' oil volume was required.

Always good to have an extra litre on hand, i'd buy one to keep even if you don't need it.

Draining the sumps on an S65 does not drain the oil cooler.
The oil change volume is the same 8.8L for any S65 regardless of what oil cooler is present. |

No extra oil needed between oil changes. With that said, I generally run a full 9L of oil instead of the recommended 8.8L. I've never had an issue with the electronic oil reader reading high after an oil change.
Reasoning is people say running slightly overfilled is beneficial for track use. Whether or not that is true is to be debated. |
