retaining M button programming without iDrive?

(unsurprisingly) the back of the car was pretty easy to strip out, and i'm moving to the front pretty soon. got me thinking -- if i rip out the idrive and don't put it back in, do i lose the ability to program the M button? or will it retain whatever setting it last took? right now it puts the car into S4, DSC Off, and Normal power mode.

if so, is the middle ground to rip out hte radio module but keep the screen? or is the radio module the brains of iDrive and the screen is just a scree?

M mode is programmed into the steering column so you can still enable and disable it via your steering wheel.

the M-Mode settings are stored in the DME. the only problem is, you lose the ability to change the settings with out the i-drive. i don't think there is any solution to that atm.

You just set everything how you want and press and hold the M Button and it will save the current settings in the DME. The only thing you lose is the additional throttle mapping settings that you can select in iDrive but not with the button.

If only there was a device that someone was working on that let you program your M-Drive settings in it via AIM's RaceStudio which would then mimic the packet from the iDrive to allow that to be freely configured on gutted cars.

IF ONLY AM I RITE??? hahaha.

i dont think the holding M button works, i think there was a different steering column for the non i-drive cars.

although i don't think anyone has proven that yet?

It definitely does work. There are two SZLs but they are simply with and without the M button. If you have an M Button you can hold it down and it will lock the settings in the DME.

The M Button SZL just has another CAN packet that (0x1D9) that simply transmits pressed or not pressed. If it's pressed for more than a few seconds the DME locks in the settings and then sends a command (in packet 0x399) to the KOMBI to flash the M icon.

sick, this is good to know for when ever i decide to swap my double hump to a base model

that reminds me ... do you know if the M3 dash is different than the non-M? looks like you can get a single hump dash on fleabay for $3-400.

i am like 99% sure the dash is the same, minus the center console piece being different.

obviously, make sure it's for your chassis E92/E90 between them there is a difference.

There is no difference between the two, I have an E92 single hump dash I got from Move Over in my E90.

Can you please elaborate on this? My car being originally a double hump E90 with the M button just calls whatever I last set it with iDrive when it was still in the car before I swapped dash boards. Would like the ability to change those settings now and was told the same thing by the person who coded my car but it just doesn't work. Is there additional coding that needs to be done to allow that 3 second button press to store current settings? The M in the display is supposed to blink after the 3-second press to confirm they are stored?

Not so sure this information is correct, as I’ve tried it in the past. Main reason being is the servotronic and power (sport and sport+) are all selectored through the I drive. I will play around with my car tomorrow, maybe I’m missing something.

I recently removed my CIC head unit and I drive controller and noticed that I don't think I can turn off DSC anymore. M mode is still working on the steering wheel however. Do I need to code out the CIC?

Pressing and holding the DSC button should turn it off iDrive or not. This is a direct wire to the DSC module, the CIC shouldn't really be involved.

I own a non-Idrive E90. I think you lose the servotronic setting or it could be one of the icons in the menu scrolling through the BC button. I've owned the car for 14 years and haven't figured out what 2 of the settings do.

My car only has power on or off and not 3 levels...I think. I haven't used it since like 2012. I hate the artificially boosted feel of it.

But yes, setup EDC, Power, and DSC to the setting you want then press and hold the M button.

I have never programmed DSC off. I would press the M button and then press DSC to turn it off. So not sure how to recall MDM iff the M button is programmed with DSC off.
