Towing with X5 / other suggestions

Knowing next to nothing about the dynamics of towing, what makes a pickup better able to handle the aero of a trailer? They aren’t materially heavier than an X5 (generally), so is it just wheelbase?

Weight, wheelbase, brakes, suspension, brake controller (already integrated) transmission, diff, cooling, etc. All specifically set up for towing vs able to tow.

My new truck has some really nice features that make it even less stressful like extra cameras, Blind spot monitoring down the side of the trailer, TPMS in the trailer, load scales built in, trailer specific nav, and on and on. Really makes it a pleasant experience vs a necessary evil.

Makes sense, thanks. Really reinforces my decision to punt on towing for the foreseeable future (though my main issue is not having space to store a trailer)

I second the Touareg/Q7/Cayanne TDI

Amazing daily and tows broken BMWs well.

20-22mpg towing, 25-26mpg combined and 30-31mpg on the highway even without deletes is great.

Also, tire load ratings, higher tongue weight limits and sway control units.

Yeah I should have picked up an F150 or Silverado lease when they were like $300-$450 here in Detroit

Now you can't touch one with towing package below $700
