It's available. Go to iTunes, update to 7.7, go to the app store, and search for dynolicious.

I thought that technology was meant for hard drives that consist of the old spinning disk construction, not the new ones that have no moving parts

Why do they have accelerometers built in?

It measures acceleration and integrates that to get velocity (which would result in some kind of compounding error over time). You would need to provide the mass of the car. I assume it asks for that? This would not include the power to overcome drag though unless it comes up with a crude estimate for that as well based on velocity. Power used to accelerate rotational masses and friction would be excluded. If it accounts for drag, it would be coming up with a pretty crude estimate of power at the wheels.

I know the iPhone has accelerometers built in so it can sense when it is lifted to the ear, and when it is turned on its side so it can switch the screen around to match.

It also has a proximity sensor to sense when it is being held to your ear so you do not inadvertently press the screen with your ear while talking on it.

It would be interesting to mount the iPhone on a rollercoaster with this app enabled to see what it says.

LOL

No its not like the the free-fall sensors in a laptop or other HDD device like a PDA or indeed an iPod (note: I am not sure if classic HDD iPods really have these or not). Those are basically on/off (not really, but for all pratical purposes) and are not good for analog measurement.

The iPhone has an accelerometer to determine the orientation of the device. They needed a way to adjust the screen when you turn it sideways so the UI can use screen real estate efficiently. It just so happens that the stock parts to do this are real good and so Apple takes advantage of that by providing access to them to programmers so that they can make real cool and innovative applications.

BTW, as far as mounting the phone in the car securely, this option, mentioned by southlight would seem to be the ideal thing to have:

I know this is kind of off topic, but I wonder how we can get this installed in the US?

I suggest strapping it to the wheel spokes. That should yield some very interesting acceleration readings.

It uses a 3-axis accelerometer (motion sensor). Related articles:

If I remember correctly, that attachment is only available in the 09 updated M3s...

You can get it for the current car, but it won't do music and phone, just phone. It also is only compatible with the original iPhone, not the 3G.

Next model year, it does both music and phone, and there will presumably be a 3G compatible adapter as well.

But, I would like an iPhone attachment for the crank pully so I can verify my redline RPM.

That's the reason I haven't gotten it yet. If the cradle becomes dual function I will.

Why do they have accelerometers built in?
The iPhone and iPod touch do not have built-in hard-drives. They use solid-state memory (8GB, 16GB and 32GB) so there are no moving parts.

The accelerometer makes the iPhone and iPod touch into incredible portable game consoles too -- there are a couple of racing games that are out of this world. To control them you simply tilt the device in the direction you want to go. It's brilliant!

Here's a direct iTunes App Store link to the Dynolicious application:

I did about 5 runs earlier, but it only saved 3 for some reason. I'm sure that was user error, though. The best it recorded for 0-60 was 5.7 and said max HP was 278, although the road was slightly uphill. Definitely not the results I wanted, but it's still cool to see a graph of the telemetry. I might test it some more tomorrow.
