Cracked VANOS hub cover

Was just about to put the old girl away for the winter and decided to top her up on about .5 liters of oil as I usually have to do every few thousand miles and look what I find. Realistically how long do I have before this thing ends up clogging my oil pickup?

Don’t know if it broke at 112,999k or 90k. I rationalized on mine that it didn’t just happen most likely should be fine for a bit. Just because I know of it now doesn’t make it any more or less problematic.

None of my cracked/warped covers were loose when replacing, still had to pry them off at which point they crumbled.

Don’t mess around with snap-on covers or trying to guess which style will be ok. I went with Carbahn waaher style, there are other bolt on options and plenty of threads on the topic

These look great, but I'm a little put off by the fact that the bolts have to be removed and the torque sequence looks quite daunting. I'll definitely be doing this myself so I may end up going with the snap-on ones just due to ease of installation while still benefitting from the longevity of them not being garbage plastic.

Its not the torque sequence that makes these type of ones a little more difficult (refer to Stretan from M539 YouTube video, it’s fairly straightforward torque wise), its the fact you need to re time the engine and need the engine retiming tools.

The backwards torque wrench and 200 ft lbs looked more difficult than buying the timing tool to me.

The Sloan ones should be good. Just make sure all of the tabs click in place.

Here is the link to our VANOS Cover Cups. Spring covers that are captive under the central bolt are the only truly permanent solution. There have been plenty of threads where snap on covers have failed- it's just replacing a failure prone part made of plastic with a failure prone part made of metal.

Exactly. Nothing wrong with a good-quality snap-on cover. As long as it's installed properly.
