If you don't get pre-ignition then how do you get engine damage? Optimal performance is as close as you can get to pre-ignition without actual pre-ignition. In the case of C&D's test below the M5 actually got better mpg on the lower octane, although all of them are well within the range of standard error and wind direction could've made a bigger difference. But in no case does the cost of the higher octane alone make up for the difference in price.

Better performance, yes, and that's more important to me than MPG, but do you really think the average BMW owner does anything but put in the cheapest stuff and we don't see BMW's (Or MB's and Audi's) dying at 100k miles.

I suspect that 91 is probably best for my car with no tune, but my only options are 93 and 89, so I'll keep using 93. But not because I think 89 will damage my engine.

Love the relatively cheap 93 octane fuel at Sam’s Club (was actually $2.75 a couple of weeks ago).

FWIW there are NO long tube, single tank fuel haulers. There are several tanks inside that "long tube" you see. In pipelines they inset a "pig" between runs of different liquids so they do not mix. I know of no gas refineries in Alaska so they are only piping crude in the pipe.

yesterday, premium was $2.87 at AAFES and $2.89 at Costco in San Antonio... I was quite shocked. (edit: I asked my friend here and she said that it was even cheaper last week) I'm just visiting, but maybe I'll move down here for these ridiculous low gas prices!

except one major obstacle for me to overcome... I've lived in a no-front-license plate for so long, not really sure if I have the guts to drill two holes in the front bumper to mount a front license plate. (having "escaped" from the state that I grew up in, which also required front license plates)

Texas is wonderful!! And living in a state that has oil and gas money is great!! Texas has about $24 billion in their rainy day fund. Only California has more and Illinois has all of $2 billion. It’s the heat in Texas that will get you!! Summer starts in April and doesn’t end until October and for 90 days straight in June, July, and August, it’s at least 95 degrees every single day!!

Having said that…even though Texas technically requires a front license plate they generally don’t care. I drove without one for more than a decade.

93 Premium is $3.44 at Costco here in Chicago and about $4.40 at Shell.

It’s interesting nobody reacted to this post there are multiple tanks with multiple fuel in each one. Just because there’s same truck delivering doesn’t mean there’s same gas going into those tanks. I use costco myself for most of my cars. I use additives from time to time and call it a day.

I do this, too. Whenever I’m going to take a trip that will use a significant amount of gas in one drive I put a bottle of Techron in before I fill up.

This is beyond false and bad misinformation.

There isn't random rogue Shell stations that's getting "Non-Shell spec gas"

Fuel is a commodity product that can be carried and delivered by many different fuel jobbers. It's picked up at the different Fuel "Racks" that will add the needed additives as required for the different customers.

For example in cold parts of the country Diesel is mixed at the rack with Kerosene to "winterize" the fuel. Depending on where it's being delivered.

Or for example many Costco's had/have their own onsite detergents and additives dispensing system that would be metered and dosed out into the underground tanks when fuel is delivered, like pouring in a bottle of Techron but on a bigger scale.

I googled Alaska refinery and Google came up with:

Alaska has five operating refineries, with a combined processing capacity of about 164,000 barrels of crude oil per calendar day. Two of the refineries, in the Prudhoe Bay region, supply fuel for crude oil drilling operations.

In addition:
There are different types of fuel delivery trucks. There is what is referred to as a "Tank and Trailer" which is gravity fed for deliveries. They have minimal dividers and cannot deliver metered amounts. It just basically empties out whatever was loaded.

Then there are the compartmentalized trucks that are made for delivering to farm, construction sites etc... Divided to deliver on road/off road/ various grades of fuel etc.. They are made with a pump and meter to deliver as desired amounts. However these trucks usually only have high speed pumps.

Then there is a slower pump speed setup for "Fleet Filling" to deliver into gas tanks of vehicles. Often times a construction site or a fleet of busses, cement trucks etc.. can have a Fleet filling slow pumping truck come out and fuel each truck often times overnight. Saving trips to an onsite fuel tank or cardlock.

Also V6 X5 is flexible 89 works well. 91 is best for long hauls
V8 X5 i'm fine with 91, but i cant find 93. Want hear this lion roar in this M50

Additives are just snake oil.

I've bought premium gas from Sam's many times. Never had a problem.

I'm no mechanic, but I think whatever issue you had was not caused by Sam's gasoline. No... it was most likely caused by the fact that you managed to install a V6 engine in your X5?

Well, all I can say is Techron is widely regarded as some pretty effective snake oil.

Try a shot of Redex when filling the gas tank, it primes the injectors and protects the fuel system. Available from Costco.

According to AAA, all gas begins as a base fuel. Retailers take this base fuel and introduce a unique blend of additives. These additives help to clean and protect a car's engine.

In 1990, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated that gas retailers use a minimum level of additives to ensure engine cleanliness. However, in 2004, some automakers deemed these additives insufficient. As a response, they established a gas standard known as "Top Tier" gas, which requires higher levels of additives, particularly detergents.

AAA conducted independent lab tests on Top Tier gas and found it does have benefits. After approximately 4,000 miles, testers observed that vehicles using top-tier gas had 19 times fewer carbon deposits in their engines.
