TTV Flywheel - Long(ish) Term Owners Chime In
Hey everyone
I'm at about 15k kms (~9k miles) on my manual transmission TTV lightweight flywheel with OEM 09+ clutch. Got code 2B61 clutch slipping, and it's pretty obvious when driving the car at low speed loading up the clutch. Feels like it's glazed and intermittently grabbing. Any other owners around my mileage or more with a TTV flywheel? I guess I need to drop the transmission again to find out exactly what's going on in there, but if the flywheel needs to be resurfaced, I'm not sure I want to gamble and do it to see if I'll need to do it again in another 15k kms. Can't be dropping the transmission that often Any thoughts or similar experiences also appreciated! Cheers

Did you break in the new clutch properly?
I am experiencing pre-mature clutch failure on my E36 M3. Obviously a different car, but same concept.. Clutch is slipping at low speeds when I put my foot down. I did not adhere to any sort of clutch break in and I suspect that is my issue. |

Oem clutch is stout, do you slip the clutch incessantly? Might this be an operator problem? What prompted the first clutch replacement?

How does one slip the clutch incessantly? I’ve got other manual cars that have never had clutch wear issues with so I think it’s safe to say that I’m not the problem. I changed it because I have an ‘08 and I wanted to update the clutch before the pressure plate broke and split my bellhousing in half turned out to be very good timing on that actually, but yea I did the ttv flywheel at that time since I had to update to an ‘09 anyways.

By literally slipping the clutch and being lazy with getting off the pedal? Even easier to do with a lightweight flywheel. But if you say it’s not you, then great.
Maybe it’s defective? It is odd to wear out an oem clutch prematurely. They’re more than capable of 100k+ supercharged miles, including the 08.

Would be great to know if there are others with the TTV flywheel with more mileage on it than me. Then at least we’d know it’s not an impending problem for everyone else with a TTV flywheel and either mine is defective or it’s something else.

I broke my clutch in with all of 300 miles, maybe less. Same setup as you, oem clutch with a ttv flywheel and its still going good plus im supercharged. How do you set off when you start driving? I usually just come off the clutch with the smallest throttle application, like I can get going at idle. I think the oem clutch can take some abuse in terms of hard shifting and launching the car but its the overheating that they dont like. Let me ask you, as sfar as breaking the clutch in, did you just drive the car or did you transfer clutch material to the flywheel as intended? Im only at 4000 miles on my car, but its 4000miles of very hard driving.
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/-RklRwSMl2M this setup can take some hard ass shifts, like chirping the tires 2nd-3rd gearshift so I believe the issue isnt one of mechanical nature. its either operator or contamination.

Lol at the name of that video But yea, I’m puzzled too. Theoretically it could be somehow I’m driving the car, but again given how it’s only been 15k kms I think it would have to be really obvious, like riding the clutch constantly to be operator error. And I’ve had lots of friends and a few other mechanics in the car with me, telling me that it’s not me, and I can drive manual fine I’ll be dropping the transmission probably in the next couple weeks and I’ll take some pictures.

So after a few months, I’ve got somewhat of an update.
I dropped the transmission and pulled the clutch and TTV flywheel out. Interestingly, the clutch looks good still and only wear looks to be some hot spotting on the flywheel. I’ve swapped in a brand new OE ‘09+ clutch and flywheel and the car is now driving great. So, it’s still a bit of a mystery as to what exactly is the culprit here. Hopefully other TTV flywheel owners don’t start to get clutch slipping like I did. I’ve done about 400km on the new clutch and flywheel so far, so still taking it easy to make sure I break it in properly.

So far so good on the stock setup! Honestly, it was really only on downshifts and in neutral that I could notice the difference the ttv wheel makes. I do miss those downshifts, but it is really nice to not have the chatter of the flywheel anymore. Car sounded so broken with it I'm about 700kms on the new setup so haven't gone full throttle yet. Waiting until I hit 1000kms. Maybe I'm being excessive, but I want to be ultra careful I break it in properly.

I’d love to hear from another 6spd ttv flywheel user who’s done more mileage than me so we know that it’s not an invevitble issue for everyone who installs one. I’ve done 1500kms on the new clutch and oe flywheel combo now. I just did my first 1st gear -> 3rd gear wide open throttle shifting, to ensure I’ve waited long enough for the clutch to break in. It pulls and grabs hard. So much of a difference that it’s making me think that my clutch was very very slowly wearing down before and I just couldn’t notice it happening since it was so gradual.

Under load, accelerating in normal and spirited driving conditions, I couldn’t feel or notice a difference with the ttv flywheel. I don’t have a carbon driveshaft so maybe the combination of the ttv + cf ds would be more noticeable. Other than that, the chatter with it in neutral is pretty loud. For example, if you sit at a stop light with the car in neutral, it will probably bother you if your car isn’t already a stripped out racecar. The car genuinely sounds broken lol so I’m pretty happy to have the oe back in for that.

im surprised here. I thought there would be a noticeable acceleration when in 2nd and 3rd gear rolling atleast for the massive weight saving.

My butt dyno wasn’t showing a difference but I’m sure in a back to back comparison with stock, you could notice it. I would’ve loved to do a real dyno run but unfortunately I didn’t make it there before my clutch started slipping.

the shifting is alot faster with the ttv flywheel.

Bigger difference in shifting comes from a short shifter. The ultimate clutch pedal paired with the autosolutions short shift kit is perfect

This is on the list of things I’d LIKE to do but man hearing the feedback on the chatter…I don’t mind some noise, the S65 is my favorite mechanical symphony… sounds like the chatter interferes with that symphony, rather than enhances…

alot of people report gear rattle, my car strangely doesnt have any. I have been using the uuc fluid mixture for years now in every manual bmw Ive owned, never experienced much of the rattling.
